EPISODE 8
“You’ll kill me like a common dog?” Gus Kukah roared furiously as his bleak eyes surveyed the warriors around him. “You have no shame and no honour! May the gods that rule us curse you!”
Kobby Obeng brought his hand down sharply, and this should have been the signal for the archers to let their arrows fly, but they hesitated. Gus Kukah’s fury and his curse had gotten to them, and none of them wanted to be the first to hit him with an arrow.
“Kill him, you useless galoots!” Kobby Obeng scre-med.
“No, stop it, you murderers!” Sarai scre-med as she raced forward, distracting the warriors.
“Face me like men, if you dare!” Gus Kukah scre-med furiously. “Cowards! I taught you better than this! Do you want Gus Kukah? Take your swords and face me!”
Fully-dressed in a fetching white gown that made her look like an angel in the glare of the torches, Sarai planted herself firmly in front of Gus and faced the warriors.
“Move aside, miss!” Kobby Obeng said with a bitter sigh. “The prince does not want you harmed!”
“If you want to kill him, kill both of us!” Sarai scre-med with her arms held out across Gus’ body. “This is not what I was promised! Please, do not kill him!”
“What is death, Sarai?” Gus asked softly. “Is it an arrow through my heart, or a woman who would tear out my heart and tread on it?”
Sarai gasped with sheer pain and spun around to face him.
She saw the pain in his eyes again, and her l-ips trembled as she took a step back from him, her trembling fingers touching her l-ips.
“Gus!” she whispered as tears stung her eyes. “Do not hate me, I beg of you!”
And then an arrow flew through the night from the bow of one of the warriors! The man who shot the arrow was a man who hated Gus Kukah with bitter gall!
This man was a man whose brother had been taken off the detail of Palace Guards and drafted into the army by Gus, and his brother had been killed in the war with the Kobens.
This man’s name was Kofi Tengey!
His arrow sailed past Sarai’s head and smashed into the left part of Gus Kukah’s chest!
Gus gro-ned with pain as he tottered backwards and drew his sword from its scabbard!
“No!” Sarai scre-med with agony. “Gus! Oh, no!”
Another arrow zinged from the right and thudded into Gus’ right h¡p!
He tottered backwards and dropped to one knee.
Sarai, scre-ming and wailing, rushed towards him and put her arms around him.
“Hold your arrows, you fools!” Kobby Obeng scre-med frantically. “You’re going to hit the woman!”
Gus looked into Sarai’s grieving face with cold, fierce eyes.
“Let me be, Sarai!” he whispered fiercely. “Go and be his queen!”
“Get it over it, warriors!” Kobby Obeng commanded. “Get the woman out of there!”
Many warriors with drawn swords rushed at Gus and Sarai. She was scre-ming but four warriors held her arms and dragged her away. With a roar, Gus Kukah gained his feet and spun from the slashing swords of the other warriors.
Although impaled with poisoned arrows, Gus was like a spirit in motion! His sword slashed up and down and ripped sideways…and four warriors fell to the ground dead!
He charged through the warriors, spinning effortlessly from their attacks and counter-attacking, his speed so fast that he seemed to be a blur, and in the flash of a minute about ten warriors were lying dead on the ground.
His roar shattered the night as he looked up slowly at Kobby Obeng and pointed his sword at him.
“You want me dead?” he hissed furiously. “Come get me if you dare, you bloody traitor!”
He leapt into the air suddenly with his sword drawn back!
Kobby gasped and tried to bring up his sword as raw panic assailed him! He had not expected Gus to come for him! How many times had he not seen this perfect killing machine in action on the battlefield? Gus had always been like air, like a bird, his movements too fluid to be human!
And now Kobby knew he was facing certain death!
He watched Gus’ body looming towards him and he cringed, holding up his arms defensively. And then, luckily, arrows came flying out from the night and smashed into Gus Kukah!
Gus’ aerial attack was fouled by the poisoned arrows, and he crashed to the ground hærd.
Sarai scre-med!
Gus gained his feet with arrows sticking out of his body.
He bellowed fiercely, and then he did something unexpected: he turned and began to run towards the Pale Lands!
“Don’t let him get away!” Kobby Obeng scre-med. “Get him!”
But the warriors, as if by one understanding, stayed their hands!
None of them made any attempt to attack Gus again as he fled towards the Pale Lands!
Kofi Tengey fitted an arrow into his bow and lined it up, and then he released it! The deadly arrow arced in the air and smacked into Gus Kukah’s back heavily. The impact drove Gus Kukah forward and he slammed heavily on the ground!
Kofi Tengey emerged from the bushes with hatred on his face as he drew out another arrow from the pouch across his back.
“Die, you bastard!” he whispered with hatred as he began to fit his arrow.
Sarai’s eyes moved in the direction she had seen the arrow coming from and she saw Kofi Tengey!
“You evil skunk!” she scre-med and bounded to her feet! She picked up a sword on the ground where the dead warriors were lying. scre-ming and weeping, she raced towards Kofi Tengey.
The archer had fitted his arrow and was raising it to fire at Gus Kukah when he heard the scre-ming woman, and he tried to turn but he was too late!
Sarai struck him through the ribs with the sword and it went in deep, cutting into his heart! Kofi Tengey grunted with shock and pain as he looked at Sarai with great horror! Sarai twisted the sword savagely and Kofi Tengey scre-med as blood bubbled from his mouth. A moment later he keeled forward on his side and fell down dead!
Gus pushed himself up with the arrows sticking out of his body. Again, he moved forward drunkenly.
Kobby Obeng cursed and jumped from his horse with his sword drawn.
“Get the woman, goddammit, and keep her tied!” he scre-med. “Warriors, to me!”
About ten warriors ran with him as they chased Gus!
Gus Kukah came to the bamboo barrier which separated the Pale Lands from Densua.
He could hear the ominous sounds coming from the Pale Lands and hear the ghostly voices from beyond! Suffused with pain and agony as the poison in the arrows worked their deadly effects in his blood, he raised his sword and cut down the bamboo pillars in front of him!
He turned once and saw Kobby Obeng and the warriors racing towards him with murder on their faces.
