Episode 7.

🌷EVA🌷
Sandra sat down across me on my little dining table and inspected me serenely.

“Oh, girl. Just one night and you look like hell!” She exclaimed in awe at the disgusting look on my face, swollen eyes with visible black corners explaining it all.

“How does hell look like?” I asked trying to make a joke of it but my sore look disappointed me.

“You look like some woman raving mad and believe me, you need to see a doctor, what are you doing to yourself?” She shook her head.

“What? Please, spare me that sermon this morning, I’ve got no strength for it, let me tackle one problem at a time” I gave up trying to eat and dropped my spoon.

“Truth… They say, is always bitter. I just wish there’s a better way to make you understand it” Sandra never stops, even if you close her mouth, she will talk with her butt.

“Defeated, you are right. Can I have my peace now? I guess I just lost my appetite after seeing a horrible creature like you” I snorted pushing the plate of food over to her.

“I’m not here to eat, besides, I already had breakfast at my house with my cupcake,” She said and closed the food with a cover on the table.

“If you brought a magazine, let’s get started with finding you a befitting gown” I ignored the fact that she’s trying to make me feel bad and think about what am missing right now.

“I did, but seriously, you don’t know what God has done for you, what if something happens to any of those kids, I feel guilty because I found this apartment for you instead of turning you down”

“Oh, it’s about the apartment now. Sandra, what exactly are you trying to prove drinking medicine on my headache, do I blame you?” I hissed and pushed myself away from the table.

“Sam called me this morning and I lied for you, I am no different from you but I still think Kate needs you, let’s not talk about the older ones or Sam” She continued ignoring me.

“Are you bent on making my stay here so bad and uncomfortable? You are too mean!” I retorted and glared at her.

“Are you planning to practice murder with me? If that’s the case, then come on, being unarmed” she shrugged and carried the food into the kitchen.

“Thanks for your compliment!” I exaggerated and snatched her bag away from her to look for the said magazine.

“You are welcome, always, honey” she laughed and cleared the table, I wasn’t able to eat anything.

“You said… Sam called you, what exactly did he talk about with you? Did… He says anything about the kids being sick or something?” I couldn’t help imploring.

She glanced at me mockingly and I batted my lashes, “don’t make me regret asking you” I drawled.

“Do I care? Thank God it is your village people that says, Ekpa, old rabata and all sorts of other bad names for people like you”

“Mmmm, it’s drifting slowly to insult, I think the discussion is not going to end well, so, don’t tell me again, forget it” I pretended that I don’t care again.

“You think I don’t know that you will die of heartache if I don’t tell you?” She laughed pessimistically. “Calm down, I will tell you”

“You have a big problem” I joined her to laugh.

“He told me that Kate cried all night and Tyrone keeps calling for you, he even had to take the two of them to a meeting because he couldn’t make it to service,” Sandra said.

I didn’t need to be told, I know it will happen and I feel miserable.

“Well, serves him right. He should learn how to tolerate his kids, they haven’t urinated on his important doc-ments yet” I grinned wickedly.

“You are damn bad! You expect evil to befall your hubby, girl, remember it’s Samuel we are talking about o!” She laughed.

“Oh yeah, at least, I know he didn’t snore all through the night but cared for his baby instead, you need to see him saying that I’m disturbing him” I whined.

“He’s a man, you voluntarily want to suffer him for a while” She chuckled and ground coffee. “Am now doing your shit for you” she added referring to the coffee.

“Do you have a choice? Let me see…” I sat down on a plastic chair beside the window and opened the magazine, “what we have here,”

“It smells wonderful! Where did you get it, I think I know? Sam got it from San Diego on his last trip!” She exclaimed practically.

“The wh0le neighborhood is keeping a tab on me, I’m not surprised, we are almost in the same estate” I joked.

“You told me… ”

“I never did!”

“You forgot? You mentioned it, seriously speaking!”

“I don’t forget so easily, I still remember the events that took place on Saturday, April 17th, twenty-five years ago, and extraordinarily, it wouldn’t have left my mind”

“Eva, that was a big event and this is…”

“Small event I guess? You are a scammer!”

We burst into loud laughter, the coffee was ready when the laughter subsided and we drank it and looked over at the magazine.

“All these doesn’t make sense, I already told you to choose from the ones I found online, do you know how many years I spent in fashion school?” I scoffed when she kept rejecting the wedding gowns.

“I don’t care, I choose what I like” she waved me off.

“Am not going to remain in wedding gown display, I will simply skip it and move into another one and believe me, I have already sh¡pped in the dresses I chose, I don’t have your time”

“For my wedding kwa! On my own body, get ready to wed with Sam again because… ”

“Do you know I play the score here, I say what happens, don’t ruin my business for me, mtcheew!” I hissed.

“That’s… ” she looked over at the counter where I kept my phone, it’s vibrating. “Go take that, let me take my time, do too,” she said.

I went to take the call and you won’t believe how excited I am that Samuel has finally called again, I can’t wait to hear his voice, I have missed him.

I got a big disappointment, his mother is calling instead. I sighed vehemently, cleared my throat, and received the call.

“Good morning, Mommy” I greeted but my heart flew up when Sam’s voice came over the phone.

“Eva, please, don’t disconnect on me, I figured you won’t reject my mother’s call and so, I drove all the way here, please, listen, I will be quick!” He talked way too fast and that sent shivers through my body.

“I… Uhm, can you please calm down and…” I could hear my baby’s voice as she cried and it played like background music over there. I became a loss for words and I clutched my neck.

“I beg of you, please, I will do anything you want, just… ”

“I will be there right now!” I couldn’t wait any longer, I ran into my bedroom immediately and jumped into the first cloth my hand caught in my closet.

Sandra was right behind me, “What is wrong, Eva?” She was asking but I didn’t spare even a second explaining anything to her.

“I will call you, help me with your car key” I requested when I ran outside and saw her car packed among other cars owned by a few occup-nts of the building.

“I will drive you to wherever you are rushing to, I can’t watch you drive in this condition” she offered and went to pick her car key.

I don’t have any strength to argue so I allowed her, she helped lock the door and drove me to Sam’s parents’ house.

🌷SAM🌷
I didn’t mean to freak her out but I guess she is flying all the way here because of Kate’s cries.

I just noticed that she can weep for Niger and I can not comprehend what her problem is. She won’t stop no matter what I do and I feel like the worst father now.

My mother has been a great help, she is sitting calmly on her laps now and Tyrone on my father’s.

I should have known better than to take them with me to a meeting and I got the worst day ever on my record book.

“You haven’t told me where Eva went, Sam, talk to me, what is all this about?” My mother came to sit beside me on the veranda.

“She went to work, mama” I replied weakly.

“What sort of work?! And why in heaven’s sake would she leave this little child behind?!” My mother shouted angrily.

“Calm down, Mama. I have called her and she must be on her way” I said and a car horn blazed the air immediately.

“Are you sure the two of you aren’t quarreling?” She asked more seriously giving me a scrutinizing glare.

“Mama! We are fine, I go on business trips too, she needs to go and I gave her a go-ahead” I said looking at the gate as the car drove in.

I recognized the car at once and something crossed my mind, interesting.

Eva was already out of the car and running towards us before the driver even thought of how to park the car in the right s₱0t.

Now, I can’t tell if she is pretending because my mother is here or she is for real. Whatever I just feel excited to see her, I have missed her so much.

It feels like an eternity that we didn’t share our bed last night, how did I cope without her during those useless trips and business meetings while she is all worried in the house?

“Good morning, mama” she grasped reaching to take Kate who is already pulling herself away from my mother’s arms.

“Don’t expect me to answer that, I will deal with you soon, I never expected this of you, you of all people, Eva!” My mother exclaimed and walked away.

Eva shifted her gaze to me as she sat down to br-astfeed Kate. I returned her look eyeball to eyeball until she brought her head down and smiled down at Kate.

I looked up when I heard footsteps and I saw Sandra coming towards us, “I thought as much” I mumbled and went into the house.

“Sam?” Sandra called but I didn’t turn, I don’t know who I should be angry with, wasn’t she the same person that told me that she doesn’t know her whereabouts?

Tyrone must’ve heard his mother’s arrival because I saw him running towards the veranda happily from the vegetable garden where he was with my father.

“How will I compensate the chairman for the statement report Kate peed on? It would have been better if I didn’t go to that meeting” I murmured.

If I have to beg Eva to take those two with her, I will. I don’t know if I can handle her in the office tomorrow.

Oh, God, who did I offend? Why did I make such a stupid mistake? Who told me that divorce is a great choice?!

I slumped onto a chair in the parlor… Just one day, one night, and half-day, and am I like this? Jeez!
