CHAPTER FIFTY-NINE : THE ESCAPE

With utmost care, I lifted Jing into my arms, holding her close to my chest as though afraid she might disappear if I let her go. Her arms wrapped around me, and a sigh of relief escaped her lips. In that moment, we shared a wordless connection, a silent acknowledgement.

I had only three minutes to think about our situation and being around Reon is not a good idea, I should leave as soon as possible.

As I began to move towards the door with Jing in my arms, Reon stepped in front of me, his gaze filled with a mix of emotions that were hard to decipher. He knew that time was of the essence, and the urgency in his eyes was undeniable.

They definitely is more to this.

“Muchen,” he said, his voice filled with a rare sense of gravity. “You need to leave immediately. There’s something you must know.” He glanced at Jing in my arms, and I frown

” What do you mean?”

Jing looked up at me with a mixture of happiness and concern. “Muchen, what’s happening?” she asked, her voice filled with the sweetness that had always warmed my heart. But I can’t let that get to me, she might be thinking Reon is to be trusted but he isn’t.

I lowered her gently to her feet, keeping a protective hand on her shoulder as I faced Reon. “I’ll explain everything later, Jing,” I assured her. “For now, we have to go.”nodding to Reon words, I pretend to trust him, the fact he still wish to leave with us is really suspicious.

I turned my attention back to Reon, my brow furrowing with impatience and concern. “Tell me what you need to, but it can’t wait any longer. We need to leave.”

Reon took a deep breath, and his gaze met mine, filled with a mixture of regret and resolve. “It’s about Alexander, Muchen. He’s aware of Jing’s whereabouts, and he’s coming for her.” I nod but frown after seconds

” Aware? How did he know that?” Stepping closer, I grab him by the neck ” you told him, didn’t you”

” Stop being paranoid” he slap my hands off him ” if I wanted Jing dead, do you think you would have gotten to this place, I told you, didn’t I?? So calm down”

A chill ran down my spine at the mention of Alexander. I knew that my old enemy wouldn’t stop at anything to get Jing. The urgency of the situation hit me like a hammer. Time was running out, and we had to escape, for Jing’s safety and for our future together.

“Then let’s go,” I declared, determination hardening my voice. “We’ll face whatever comes our way, but we’re leaving this place, and we’re not looking back.”

We swiftly made our way out of Reon’s home. I frown when I couldn’t find my horse anywhere, my eyes dart left and right but no sigh of it ” hurry up ” Reon growl signaling me to keep on moving. Is this his plan?

The forest, which had seemed noisy earlier, now felt like our sanctuary, a place of refuge in the face of danger.

Jing stayed close by my side, her trust in me unwavering, and my determination to protect her unwavering. I look into her fragile eyes and I noticed it, she doesn’t trust Reon, what happened between them?

The thick air of the forest was heavy with anticipation, and strange scents wafted through the trees. It was as if the very essence of the woods held its breath.

Reon led the way, his knowledge of these woods evident as he navigated through the tangled underbrush and overgrown pathways. It was clear he had prepared for our departure, and I found it even more suspicious.

Our footsteps fell in rhythm, a united front against the unknown. But as we pressed deeper into the forest, my thoughts remained on the danger that pursued us. I couldn’t shake the feeling that Alexander was closing in, that he would stop at nothing to tear Jing away from me once more.

The image of Alexander’s menacing smile, a cruel reflection of a past I’d tried to forget, haunted me. I had fought him before, and I was ready to do it again, but this time, the stakes were higher. Jing’s safety and happiness hung in the balance.

As we continued our escape through the forest, I couldn’t help but reflect on how love had brought me to this point. The love I felt for Jing had changed everything, had ignited a determination and strength within me that I had never known. I didn’t hesitate to lift her up in my arms, she still look so weak, what happened to her ” thank you ” she mumble, her eyes shutting close.

I have to focus on one thing—getting as far away from our pursuer as possible. Jing needs medical attention and fast, The forest seemed to stretch on endlessly, and I could only hope that we were moving quickly enough to stay ahead of Alexander’s relentless pursuit.

The forest was a realm of tangled underbrush and towering trees, their branches forming a canopy overhead. The air was thick with humidity and carried with it the earthy scent of moss and leaves.

Reon glanced back at us, his eyes betraying a mixture of relief and unease. I had been his friend for centuries, and my sudden arrival must have stirred a whirlwind of emotions within him. He quickened his pace, and I knew that he was leading us to a place of refuge, somewhere where we could rest and regroup.

Somewhere that will make everything easier for him, yes, I have been his friend for centuries but he betrayed me the moment Margaret balt her eyes, even though they were siblings he loved her like a lover should.

As we moved deeper into the forest, I watch him ahead of us, how he kept moving without stoping, he definitely knows where he is headed, he knows exactly what he is aiming for, I mean, we have been walking for almost an hour, no stop, just straight.

” We should spend the night here” he stop right in front of a hut, it sure is getting late too

” Do you think is safe here?” Reon turn and look at me, our gaze meet each other, it was evident he is hiding something

” Am sure, I will go get some woods ” I nod at his words and watched as Reon hastily left the hut to gather the necessary firewood. The dim light filtering through the hut’s small, dusty window barely illuminated our surroundings. My attention was fixed on Jing as I gently placed her on the creaky wooden bed, a relic of another time.

She looked frail and weary, her skin even paler than before. I couldn’t help but worry for her well-being. It was clear that the ordeal had taken a toll on her, and my heart ached at the sight of her suffering.

As I sat beside the bed, contemplating our next steps, I noticed Jing stir. Her eyes still closed, sweats firming in her forehead. Her voice was weak, but the urgency in her words was evident.

“Muchen,” she whispered, her voice barely more than a hoarse murmur. “Don’t… leave.”

Her plea tugged at my heartstrings, and I quickly reassured her. “I won’t leave, Jing. I’m right here.” What could she be dreaming about, what did that bastard of Margaret did to her!!!

My anger was resurfacing, I knew for a fact that I must kill her, after taking Jing back to the palace, I will definitely kill her.

Reon’s absence began to weigh on me as minutes turned into what felt like hours. The forest beyond the hut was filled with an eerie silence, broken only by the rustling of leaves and the distant call of a bird. I grew increasingly uneasy, torn between my concern for Jing and Reon betraying us.

I tried to rise from my seat, intending to go check on Reon, but Jing’s trembling hand reached out and clutched my arm, her eyes imploring me to stay. Her grip was surprisingly strong, given her weakened state. She is awake.

“Please, Muchen,” she whispered. “Don’t go.”

I hesitated, leaving Jing to find out about Reon will be wrong, might be what he is hoping for, I didn’t hesitate to lift Jing in my arms and out of the hut into the forest.

The minutes ticked away as I carried Jing through the dense, foreboding forest. Her fitful sleep weighed on my heart, she doesn’t even have enough energy to be awake.

her distress seeping into my every step. But with each passing moment, the sense of urgency grew stronger. Footsteps, relentless and gaining speed, echoed behind us. A week had passed since I had taken blood, and I felt the weakening effects of it, making this pursuit even more tiresome.

The forest seemed transformed in the darkness of night, taking on a scary, cold and unfriendly aura. The once-familiar path had become treacherous, the branches of the trees clawing at us as if trying to keep us from escaping the approaching danger.

I couldn’t afford to slow down, my supernatural senses amplifying the impending threat. Every breath I took, every heartbeat, intensified the rush of blood in my veins. I was trapped between the instinct to protect Jing and the haunting presence of an enemy closing in. The forest’s strange scent and unnatural silence added to the unbelievable experience.

Time was against us as I pushed myself to run faster, to find a way out, to reach safety.

And then, it happened – the forest led us to a stop. A deep, rocky cliff that descended into an ocean. I came to a halt, my heart racing in my chest, the adrenaline coursing through me.

Panic surged as the footsteps grew closer. There was nowhere left to run, and the darkness beyond the cliff edge seemed to swallow all hope. I held Jing tighter, a protective instinct flooding over me. We were trapped at the edge of the cliff with nowhere to go.

My only thought was to jump, if nothing can be done, we have to jump….my powers are slowly slipping away from me ” this is preposterous”

” I guess this is the end ” turning around, I stare at Reon ” you couldn’t even trust me” I frown, he seem to be alone, my gaze lower to a sleeping Jing, if I ever decide to jump, I have to wake her up to prevent drowning ” don’t do it ” Reon cut into my thought, I look at him ” am just here to help, trust me ” more footsteps approaching caught my attention, I notice the smile on his face ” Jing is already weak from the drug I place in her coffee, anymore stress might be death”

” How dare you ” I growl then stop, the footsteps are close to fifty, not in this state, I can’t handle that much in this state

” Muchen?” I look at Jing, thankful she is awake

” Hold your breath ” her eyes widen and I let myself fall, Reon face was covered with anger.
