Danica
After a while, it dawned on me that mum didn’t show up.

Oh! She should be so mad at me. I ruined her plans….I wonder what her reaction would be towards me.

The prince looked troubled as he operated his phone and after a while, he walked out of the room, his eyes still on the phone.

“Danica..” Grandma shook my hand softly. “What’re you doing with him, Danica? I thought I warned you? When did you become so close?”

I felt guilt and fear wash over me as she spoke. Oh! It suddenly dawned on me what she was likely to do to me for disobeying her. She was definitely going to take me out of the city.

“I’m…I’m sorry, granny. I never wanted to disobey you, believe me. Its just…”,I paused and bit my lower lip.
“The prince and I became close…during a practical in school. But there’s nothing serious going on between us – trust me. I just…”
I paused again and sighed.

“I’m really sorry, granny. And I promise it won’t happen again, please”.

“There won’t be a next time, Danica” she said what finally splitted my heart.
Oh God! Just what I’d been so scared of.

“Your life’s already in danger and we need to leave as soon as possible. As soon as you’re out of here,, Danica, we’re leaving the city. We need to go far from here, Danica”.

I felt a heavy lump in my throat, unable to gulp it down.

I tried talking to her but couldn’t. So, I just clamped my mouth shut, trying so hærd to fight back the tears that pricked my eyes.

I didn’t want to leave – tho I couldn’t really say why, I just didn’t want to leave.

I’d have to start all over again – being alone, unable to go to school…everything would have to go back to the scratch again.

Oh God! I hated it and it made me so scared.

“Don’t worry,,Danica. Everything will be fine, okay?” She cooed and kssed my palm and2 only nodded ruefully.

Nathan
“What do you mean he was attacked? How did it happen?” I asked Mabel over the phone.

“I don’t really have all the details for now, brother. But I heard he was brutally injured and is currently unconscious. Chances are..he might go into coma”. She replied and I flinched.

“What? Coma?” I repeated.
Geez!

Not like I care about him tho,,but….could this really be a coincidence?

Few hours ago, I was almost shot. Now, Eric? Could it be a mere coincidence?

“You need to come home, Nathan. Mother is so worried about you”. She further said on the phone.

“I can’t….I can’t come home now, Mabel. I’m really occupied with something at the moment”.

“And what could that be that’d be so important?”

I sighed and looked around, then whispered into the phone:

“Danica was shot at the party and I need to stay here with her at the hospital”.

“Wait….what??” She shrieked.

“What’re you…What’re you talking about? How the hell did it happen?”

“I don’t know. But I have a feeling I was the target but she mistakenly took the bullet for me. No matter what, Mabel, don’t tell mum about this. Just look for a way to hold her off and convince her to stop worrying about me because I’m fine here”,

There was silence.

“Oh my! But how’s she Nathan? Is she fine?” She asked.

“Yes, yes. She’s awake now. Don’t worry about her”.

“Can I…can I at least, talk to her?”

“You cant, Mab. Her grandmother’s with her and….she’s kinda weird”.
I itched my brows.

“Weird? How?”

‘I don’t know. She doesn’t entirely like me. Don’t know what her problem is”,

“Oh, Nathan”. She sighed.
“I feel so terrible about all these. Please, try to be safe, okay? I’ll try my best to convince mum”,

“Alright. Thank you, Mabel. I’ll call you later”.

“Anything for you, big brother. Bye”.

And my l-ips stretched in a smile as i ended the call.

Oh! What a long night it has been.

I thought of going back to the room to join Danica, but felt so uncomfortable around her grandmother. I could feel it, she didn’t like me – not at all. And I wondered why her reasons were.

Taking a deep breath, I took a seat outside the room and just as I leaned my back against the wall, my phone awakened with another ring.

Oh God! Do I ever get a chance to rest?

But peeking at the caller, I discovered it was Andrea. Oh.

“Hey” I called lightly, touching my brows.

“Hi Nathan”, she beamed on the phone immediately.
“I’m so glad you picked up at the first beep”.

“Yeah, how’ve you been, Andrea?”

“I’ve been fine, I guess. Well, that’s by the way. I actually have goodnews for you”

O…kay. I paused and listened attentively.

“I’ll be coming to your hometown in two days time!!” She squealed, obviously blushing. But my brows creased.

Maya
I got home from work, feelings so tired – so tired, all I wanted to do was get into the room and sleep.

I walked into the sitting room and met Bitna watching a movie.

“Good evening, mum” she greeted with her eyes on the tele.

“Evening, darling. How’re you doing?” I asked tiredly, going to take a seat beside her.

‘I’m fine” she mumbled and I knew she was still angry over the previous incidence.

“”Is your daddy home? Or he went out as well?” I asked, but she didn’t reply.

“Bitna…”

“I don’t want to talk about him, mum. And yes, He’s not at home”, she rolled her eyes and took the TV remote, changing the channel.

I sighed and just let her be.

Shortly, I heard my phone ring and brought it out of my bag.

Oh! It was Emma.

I heaved and picked it up.

“Emma…”

“Maya, where are you? We need to talk” she cut me off, sounding so unusual.

“Well, I’m…home. But I’m so tired and don’t think I can…”

“It’s important, Maya. It’s about your daughter”. She cut me off and this time around, I was more surprised.

My daughter? I turned to look at Bitna and her eyes were fixed on the tele.

“What about her?” I asked, sounding more interested.

She hesitated a little.

“Do you know anyone called Kim? Or Danica…do the names sound familiar to you?” She asked and I felt a little bit of repulse.

“Well…I do. What’s wrong?”

“Maya…” She called.
“I think your daughters might’ve been exchanged”.

What?

I flinched immediately. What is she talking about?

“Switched?” I stood up from the couch slowly, moving away from Bitna.

“Wh….What’re you talking about, Emma? What do you mean by switched?”

“I don’t really have all the details for now,Maya. But I overheard the lady – Kim – having an argument with her mum about it. They made mention of your name, Williams, Richærd, and I’m pretty sure she said her husband had switched the babies.

“I don’t know if it’s true, Maya, but that was what I heard”

No.

This is not possible.

I felt my heart ache as I placed my hand on my chest and walked out of the house. This isn’t possible.

“Emma…” I called fraily, unable to contend the news.
My heart was beating rapidly.

Kim….Kim switched our babies? She took…she took my child? Bitna isn’t my child? But Kim’s?

No; that isn’t possible. It cant be possible.

“How did you find out?” I asked,bewildered.

“They’re presently at the hospital. Danica was shot and is being treated”,,

What?

“She was shot? Why? By who?”

“We don’t know yet,,Maya. But it appears to be a stray bullet. Tho, she’s fine now”.

My head was almost spinning from all the information. I couldn’t take it; didn’t know what to think.
It shouldn’t be possible.

How did it happen? How did Kim get access to my child? No; I couldn’t believe it.

“I’ll…I’ll call you back” I fluttered and ended the call.

I breathed heavily and sank my fingers into my hair. Oh my God! What’s happening?

“Mum?” I turned immediately when I heard Bitna’s voice and found her walking towards me.

My heart melted instantly at the sight of her.

“Is there a problem?” She asked, standing in front of me and I stared dumbfounded-ly at her for some seconds.

“Mum?” She tapped my arm, snapping me out of my thoughts.

Oh my God! Bitna….
Could it be possible she isn’t my daughter? But the daughter Of Kim?

My heart was too heavy for the news as tears came threatening at me, but i forced them back.

“I’m….I’m fine, darling. I’m just…” I paused and turned to back her.

“I’m just a little tired and they’re still trying to bore me from work”.

I sniffed.

“Are you sure? You look really troubled”.she persisted but I didn’t say a word. I couldn’t.

No; I can’t draw conclusions yet until I’m sure. For all I know, this might just be a lie – a terrible lie.

I turned to face Bitna.

“I’m really sorry, honey. But I need to leave now. I…I need to go somewhere important. I promise I’ll be back, okay?” I touched her hair.

“Huh? But its so late, mum. Besides,,you just got home from work. Do you really need to leave right away?” She was displeased.

“I’m so sorry, Bitna. But I have to leave. Its…its really important”,,

A frown crept into her face and and she rolled her eyes.

“I guess I shouldn’t be surprised then. It’s not like its a new thing anyway” she huffed and walked away and I just stared at her – hurtfully.

A tear finally dropped but thank goodness she was backing me at that moment, so she couldn’t see it.

I sniffed and started towards my car, searching for Williams’ contact on my phone. I needed to tell him about it.

“Argh!!” I scre-med and threw the vase on the floor, crashing it to pieces.

Oh! I hated this!!

I hate you, Danica!! I hate you, Maya!! I hate everyone of you!

All I wanted was taking what’s mine, but they ended up turning my own mother against me. Swears, I’m never going to forgive them.

I smoked angrily from my cigarette, recalling everything that had happened.

For over eighteen years, I tried to fight, but only ended up losing. and now , I was on the verge of losing again.

No; not this time around. Since the truth is already out, I’d have to finish it once and for all.

I’m taking my daughter back. But Maya…I’ll make sure she never get hers. I’ll make sure she dies a lonely woman – motherless!!

I itched my head in frustration and finally left the house, headed for the palace.

I was going to expose the wh0le truth and let them know the missing disciple has been alive all these while.

I was going to make sure they take Danica away from her mother.
