Danica
After a while, it dawned on me that mum didnât show up.
Oh! She should be so mad at me. I ruined her plansâŠ.I wonder what her reaction would be towards me.
The prince looked troubled as he operated his phone and after a while, he walked out of the room, his eyes still on the phone.
âDanica..â Grandma shook my hand softly. âWhatâre you doing with him, Danica? I thought I warned you? When did you become so close?â
I felt guilt and fear wash over me as she spoke. Oh! It suddenly dawned on me what she was likely to do to me for disobeying her. She was definitely going to take me out of the city.
âIâmâŠIâm sorry, granny. I never wanted to disobey you, believe me. Its justâŠâ,I paused and bit my lower lip.
âThe prince and I became closeâŠduring a practical in school. But thereâs nothing serious going on between us â trust me. I justâŠâ
I paused again and sighed.
âIâm really sorry, granny. And I promise it wonât happen again, pleaseâ.
âThere wonât be a next time, Danicaâ she said what finally splitted my heart.
Oh God! Just what Iâd been so scared of.
âYour lifeâs already in danger and we need to leave as soon as possible. As soon as youâre out of here,, Danica, weâre leaving the city. We need to go far from here, Danicaâ.
I felt a heavy lump in my throat, unable to gulp it down.
I tried talking to her but couldnât. So, I just clamped my mouth shut, trying so hĂŠrd to fight back the tears that pricked my eyes.
I didnât want to leave â tho I couldnât really say why, I just didnât want to leave.
Iâd have to start all over again â being alone, unable to go to schoolâŠeverything would have to go back to the scratch again.
Oh God! I hated it and it made me so scared.
âDonât worry,,Danica. Everything will be fine, okay?â She cooed and kssed my palm and2 only nodded ruefully.
Nathan
âWhat do you mean he was attacked? How did it happen?â I asked Mabel over the phone.
âI donât really have all the details for now, brother. But I heard he was brutally injured and is currently unconscious. Chances are..he might go into comaâ. She replied and I flinched.
âWhat? Coma?â I repeated.
Geez!
Not like I care about him tho,,butâŠ.could this really be a coincidence?
Few hours ago, I was almost shot. Now, Eric? Could it be a mere coincidence?
âYou need to come home, Nathan. Mother is so worried about youâ. She further said on the phone.
âI canâtâŠ.I canât come home now, Mabel. Iâm really occupied with something at the momentâ.
âAnd what could that be thatâd be so important?â
I sighed and looked around, then whispered into the phone:
âDanica was shot at the party and I need to stay here with her at the hospitalâ.
âWaitâŠ.what??â She shrieked.
âWhatâre youâŠWhatâre you talking about? How the hell did it happen?â
âI donât know. But I have a feeling I was the target but she mistakenly took the bullet for me. No matter what, Mabel, donât tell mum about this. Just look for a way to hold her off and convince her to stop worrying about me because Iâm fine hereâ,
There was silence.
âOh my! But howâs she Nathan? Is she fine?â She asked.
âYes, yes. Sheâs awake now. Donât worry about herâ.
âCan IâŠcan I at least, talk to her?â
âYou cant, Mab. Her grandmotherâs with her andâŠ.sheâs kinda weirdâ.
I itched my brows.
âWeird? How?â
âI donât know. She doesnât entirely like me. Donât know what her problem isâ,
âOh, Nathanâ. She sighed.
âI feel so terrible about all these. Please, try to be safe, okay? Iâll try my best to convince mumâ,
âAlright. Thank you, Mabel. Iâll call you laterâ.
âAnything for you, big brother. Byeâ.
And my l-ips stretched in a smile as i ended the call.
Oh! What a long night it has been.
I thought of going back to the room to join Danica, but felt so uncomfortable around her grandmother. I could feel it, she didnât like me â not at all. And I wondered why her reasons were.
Taking a deep breath, I took a seat outside the room and just as I leaned my back against the wall, my phone awakened with another ring.
Oh God! Do I ever get a chance to rest?
But peeking at the caller, I discovered it was Andrea. Oh.
âHeyâ I called lightly, touching my brows.
âHi Nathanâ, she beamed on the phone immediately.
âIâm so glad you picked up at the first beepâ.
âYeah, howâve you been, Andrea?â
âIâve been fine, I guess. Well, thatâs by the way. I actually have goodnews for youâ
OâŠkay. I paused and listened attentively.
âIâll be coming to your hometown in two days time!!â She squealed, obviously blushing. But my brows creased.
What?

Maya
I got home from work, feelings so tired â so tired, all I wanted to do was get into the room and sleep.
I walked into the sitting room and met Bitna watching a movie.
âGood evening, mumâ she greeted with her eyes on the tele.
âEvening, darling. Howâre you doing?â I asked tiredly, going to take a seat beside her.
âIâm fineâ she mumbled and I knew she was still angry over the previous incidence.
ââIs your daddy home? Or he went out as well?â I asked, but she didnât reply.
G©sh!
âBitnaâŠâ
âI donât want to talk about him, mum. And yes, Heâs not at homeâ, she rolled her eyes and took the TV remote, changing the channel.
I sighed and just let her be.
Shortly, I heard my phone ring and brought it out of my bag.
Oh! It was Emma.
I heaved and picked it up.
âEmmaâŠâ
âMaya, where are you? We need to talkâ she cut me off, sounding so unusual.
âWell, IâmâŠhome. But Iâm so tired and donât think I canâŠâ
âItâs important, Maya. Itâs about your daughterâ. She cut me off and this time around, I was more surprised.
My daughter? I turned to look at Bitna and her eyes were fixed on the tele.
âWhat about her?â I asked, sounding more interested.
She hesitated a little.
âDo you know anyone called Kim? Or DanicaâŠdo the names sound familiar to you?â She asked and I felt a little bit of repulse.
âWellâŠI do. Whatâs wrong?â
âMayaâŠâ She called.
âI think your daughters mightâve been exchangedâ.

Maya
What?
I flinched immediately. What is she talking about?
âSwitched?â I stood up from the couch slowly, moving away from Bitna.
âWhâŠ.Whatâre you talking about, Emma? What do you mean by switched?â
âI donât really have all the details for now,Maya. But I overheard the lady â Kim â having an argument with her mum about it. They made mention of your name, Williams, RichĂŠrd, and Iâm pretty sure she said her husband had switched the babies.
âI donât know if itâs true, Maya, but that was what I heardâ
No.
This is not possible.
I felt my heart ache as I placed my hand on my chest and walked out of the house. This isnât possible.
âEmmaâŠâ I called fraily, unable to contend the news.
My heart was beating rapidly.
KimâŠ.Kim switched our babies? She tookâŠshe took my child? Bitna isnât my child? But Kimâs?
No; that isnât possible. It cant be possible.
âHow did you find out?â I asked,bewildered.
âTheyâre presently at the hospital. Danica was shot and is being treatedâ,,
What?
âShe was shot? Why? By who?â
âWe donât know yet,,Maya. But it appears to be a stray bullet. Tho, sheâs fine nowâ.
My head was almost spinning from all the information. I couldnât take it; didnât know what to think.
It shouldnât be possible.
How did it happen? How did Kim get access to my child? No; I couldnât believe it.
âIâllâŠIâll call you backâ I fluttered and ended the call.
I breathed heavily and sank my fingers into my hair. Oh my God! Whatâs happening?
âMum?â I turned immediately when I heard Bitnaâs voice and found her walking towards me.
My heart melted instantly at the sight of her.
âIs there a problem?â She asked, standing in front of me and I stared dumbfounded-ly at her for some seconds.
âMum?â She tapped my arm, snapping me out of my thoughts.
Oh my God! BitnaâŠ.
Could it be possible she isnât my daughter? But the daughter Of Kim?
My heart was too heavy for the news as tears came threatening at me, but i forced them back.
âIâmâŠ.Iâm fine, darling. Iâm justâŠâ I paused and turned to back her.
âIâm just a little tired and theyâre still trying to bore me from workâ.
I sniffed.
âAre you sure? You look really troubledâ.she persisted but I didnât say a word. I couldnât.
No; I canât draw conclusions yet until Iâm sure. For all I know, this might just be a lie â a terrible lie.
I turned to face Bitna.
âIâm really sorry, honey. But I need to leave now. IâŠI need to go somewhere important. I promise Iâll be back, okay?â I touched her hair.
âHuh? But its so late, mum. Besides,,you just got home from work. Do you really need to leave right away?â She was displeased.
âIâm so sorry, Bitna. But I have to leave. ItsâŠits really importantâ,,
A frown crept into her face and and she rolled her eyes.
âI guess I shouldnât be surprised then. Itâs not like its a new thing anywayâ she huffed and walked away and I just stared at her â hurtfully.
A tear finally dropped but thank goodness she was backing me at that moment, so she couldnât see it.
I sniffed and started towards my car, searching for Williamsâ contact on my phone. I needed to tell him about it.

Kim
âArgh!!â I scre-med and threw the vase on the floor, crashing it to pieces.
Oh! I hated this!!
I hate you, Danica!! I hate you, Maya!! I hate everyone of you!
All I wanted was taking whatâs mine, but they ended up turning my own mother against me. Swears, Iâm never going to forgive them.
I smoked angrily from my cigarette, recalling everything that had happened.
For over eighteen years, I tried to fight, but only ended up losing. and now , I was on the verge of losing again.
No; not this time around. Since the truth is already out, Iâd have to finish it once and for all.
Iâm taking my daughter back. But MayaâŠIâll make sure she never get hers. Iâll make sure she dies a lonely woman â motherless!!
I itched my head in frustration and finally left the house, headed for the palace.
I was going to expose the wh0le truth and let them know the missing disciple has been alive all these while.
I was going to make sure they take Danica away from her mother.
