Writer’s pov

“Da.mn it, not now!” Jayden gritted out.

He glanced at his wristwatch and impatiently looked outside the window, a deep, disapproving frowned on his forehead.

“I don’t think we’re leaving this traffic soon, sir” Jude reported after studying the situation.

“Is there no way you can maneuver this thing and get us outta here?”

Jude looked through the rearview mirror, he shut his eyes and exhaled frustratingly when he saw the cars lined up behind them.

“I’m sorry, sir, there’s nothing I can do right now” he said.

At this response, Jayden threw his head back with his hands covering his face and he gro-ned loudly.

His wristwatch started chiming warningly, he looked at it and saw a big red warning sign…his battery was showing 13% and he breathe heavily.

“Are you ok, sir?” Jude asked when he noticed his boss’ discomfort.

Jayden waved at him in reply, since he’s unable to speak because he’s already running out of breath slowly.

“Maybe we should turn back and get your battery charged before heading to the hospital” Jude suggested.

“N-no, go on” he managed to muttered.

“But you’re…”

“Just shut up!” he yelled at Jude.

Jude kept quiet immediately and continued staring at him worriedly, wondering what’s gonna happen if Jayden’s to shut down right now.

Is he ever gonna wake up? How long is it gonna take to get him up?

“Hey” Jayden called for his attention.

“Yes, sir” he answered quickly.

“Do you think I pull those off?” Jayden asked.

“Pull what off?” Jude asked him back with a confused expression.

Jayden folded his lower lip in his mouth and closed his eyes as though Jude just asked a stupid question.

“I mean those”

Jude turned to face Jayden and saw him pointing at some bicycles parked in the pavement, he chuckled nervously and shook his head.

“Judging from how fragile your heart is, I’d suggest we stick to this mode of transportation” he said, referring to the car.

“Then think of something to get us outta this da.mn traffic!” Jayden growled.

He was startled as his phone suddenly began ringing.

“Damn.it, Stephen” he cursed without checking the caller’s ID first.

He quickly reached for it and as he had expected, Stephen’s name flashing on the screen.

He grumbled coherently but answered the call anyway.

“Hello… ” he didn’t get to finish his words before moving the phone away from his ear.

“JAYDEN, WHERE IN BLO.ODY HELL ARE YOU? WHAT EXACTLY ARE YOU DOING? CAUSE YOU’RE GONNA DIE SOON IF YOU DON’T STOP RIGHT NOW. AND DON’T TELL ME YOU’RE BANGING SOME BI.TCH, YOU KNOW YOUR HEART CAN’T TAKE THAT FOR NOW… WILL THE MOTHERFU.CKER BLO.ODY SAY SOMETHING?!” Stephen ranted.

Jayden rolled his eyeballs at Stephen’s ranting, he knew he’d get a call from him because he (Stephen) must have gotten a signal by now.

“I don’t think I can still manage my 12% if you continue scre-ming my ears off”

“12%?!” Stephen exclaimed. “Well, it’s better I help you shut down quickly instead of you giving me a high blood pressure every fu.cking time!”

Jayden sighed, he could already imagine the frown lines and angry look on Stephen’s face right now.

“My wife’s got an accident and I’m rushing to the hospital as we speak” he said.

“Your wife?” Stephen asked, sounding a little bit confused.

“Cassandra”

“Oh”

“Yeah, oh… I have to go now”

Stephen sighed from the other side.

“I get it that you’re… ”

“I don’t know how you’re gonna do it or how you’re gonna make it happen, but find me and make sure I don’t shut down until she wakes up”

“Wait, what?!” Stephen exclaimed again. “Do you plan on staying by her side until she wakes up without charging your battery?!”

“Tune it down a little, you’ve been yelling too much” he scolded.

There was a brief pause from both his and Stephen’s side, then Stephen continued.

“Jayden, I know you don’t wish to live long, but for the sake of….”

“Hm, that’s all” Jayden interrupted him, then hang up before he could preach further.

He looked out the window and released an another frustrated gro-n.

CITY GENERAL HOSPITAL.

Cassandra laid unconsciously on the stretcher, with blood covered face and white top already soaked in blood.

The little girl whom she’d save earlier was by her side, holding onto her hand tightly and crying so loudly…she looked so scared.

She was running after the two female nurses that were pushing the stretcher, despite their attempt to stop her.

“La-Lady…Lady…wake up” she was spluttering amidst her wailing.

The nurses finally arrived at the emergency room and stopped, a doctor rushed over and checked Cassandra’s injury with a frown, he whispered something to one of the nurses and she quickly jotted it down.

His eyes landed on the little girl who was still holding onto Cassandra’s hand, he stared at her pitifully but at the same time smiled at her action.

He squatted down to her level and reached for her hands, but she denied him access of touching her.

He smiled.

“Hey, Angel, may I know what’s your name?” he asked softly.

The little girl stared at him for some seconds.

“Is-isabella” she answered reluctantly.

“Isabella, I’m Faith, is she your mommy?” he asked again.

The little girl (Isabella) shook her head.

“She’s my angel” she replied.

Doctor Faith nodded.

“Your angel is gonna be fine, ok?”

Isabella nodded.

“We just have to make sure she stopped bleeding and give her shots, then she’d be alright again”

Isabella nodded again.

“But we can’t do that with you letting go of her hand first, can you let go so we can save your angel?”

She averted her gaze towards Cassandra, she stared at her for a moment before letting go and stepping aside.

Doctor Faith smiled at her and pat her head.

“Thank you, Isabella” he got up and turned to the nurse nearest to him. “Nurse Cherry, you’ve got to stay back with Isabella and keep her company…take good care of her” he instructed.

“Yes, doctor Faith” nurse Cherry replied.

Doctor Faith smiled and waved at Isabella, but quickly turned and rushed into the emergency room.

Isabella stared at the big white doors until they were closed.

FEW MINUTES LATER

Isabella sat silently on a bench outside the emergency room, playing with her fingers nervously and staring worriedly at the closed doors.

“Hello, there” a man in blue uniform greeted her.

Isabella’s eyes trailed the man and her gaze landed on the gun hanging on his belt, she cringed back and gripped the nurse’s dress.

He seemed to noticed this, he quickly put his gun away and squatted and smiled at her.

“Hey, I’m inspector Fred and I’m not gonna hurt you, I just wanna ask you a few questions…is that ok?”

“A..a policeman?” Isabella asked quietly, but loud enough for Fred to hear.

“Yes, I’m a policeman and this is my colleague, Greg” he said, nodding to a man standing behind him.

Isabella simply stared between them.

“Can I ask you a few questions now?” Fred asked.

“Yeah” she answered.

Fred faced Greg and signaled him to get his writing tools ready, then turned back to Isabella.

“Who called 911 after the accident?” he asked.

“Me” she answered.

“Oh…do you have a phone?”

Isabella nodded.

“Dad bought me one” she said.

She reached for the bag crossed on her chest and pulled out a smartphone and showed Fred.

“See?” Fred reached for it, but she quickly shoved it back in her bag before he could touch it. “I called 911 with it”

Fred chuckled and nodded.

“You’re one brave little girl, right?”

“Yeah, dad always say I’m brave too” she replied.

“Well, he’s very right” Isabella smiled at his words. “So…did you see the truck driver’s face?”

She shook her, Fred reached forward and pat her head reassuringly.

“Think again” he said.

“He…it was too fast”

“I know it was too fast, but you can still try to give us some description, right?”

She tilted her head to think, but suddenly flinched back and stared at Fred in fear…she shook her head in disagreement.

“Just try h-rder, think h-rder. Is he tall or short? Is he fat or slim?” Fred asked forward.

Isabella just continued shaking her head, refusing to say anything.

“Come on, I know you can help us, just think….”

“Excuse me, you can’t force the kid” someone interrupted.

Isabella raised her head and smiled at the familiar voice, she sprang up without wasting time.

“Excuse me, who are you?” Fred asked, glaring at whoever just interrupted him.

“Daddy!” Isabella suddenly shouted and quickly ran to hug her father.

“Princess?” Jayden blinked in surprise and quickly lifted her up and hugged her to himself.

“Daddy, I miss you” she said, wrapping her tiny arms around her father’s neck.

“I missed you more, princess” Jayden replied.

β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…

Jayden k-ssed his daughter’s cheek and wiped off her tear stained face, while Fred stood there speechlessly staring at them.

“Mr Grassi?” he whispered to himself in shock.

“Princess, what are you doing in the hospital?” he asked softly, but there’s still a hint of scolding in his words.

“Accident” was her only reply.

Fred cleared his throat as if to remind them of his presence, which earned him a glare from Jayden.

“I assume you’re her dad, correct?” Fred asked.

“And I’m sure you’re the one robbing my daughter off her right by forcing her to speak, correct?” Jayden hissed at him.

Fred gulped as he doesn’t have any words to say.

“Er…she was the little girl the victim rescued from the accident”

Jayden flicked his gaze back to his daughter and did a quick scan on her, checking her body for any psychical injuries.

“Luckily she wasn’t injured” Fred said.

Jayden sighed in relief when he found no scratch on her and placed a k-ss on her forehead.

“Officer, my daughter is just 8years old and by right, I believe it’s illegal for a policeman to interrogate an eight years old”

“Yes”

“That’s my daughter’s right”

“Yes, Mr Grassi, but she’s the only witness we’ve got and we have no choice but to…. ”

“Does that mean you are tired of your job?” Jayden cut him off.

“W-what?”

“Did I stutter?”

Fred quickly shook his head.

“Good, apologize to my daughter right now” Jayden said strictly.

Fred nodded, he took a deep breath and smiled at Isabella.

“Miss Grassi, I’m sorry if I startled you earlier, I’m really sorry” he said.

Isabella huffed and turned away from him, but waved her hand dismissively.

“Officer, if you’re fast, you can get the surveillance camera of that road and catch the truck driver before he escapes” Jayden suggested.

“Thank you, Mr Grassi”

Jayden nodded.

“Er.. one last question, please, Mr Grassi”

“Hm”

“What’s her relationshΒ‘p with the victim?” Fred asked.

Jayden frowned and tilted his head quizzically.

“I’m just asking because it’s gonna help in our investigation” Fred clarified.

“Stepmom and stepdaughter” Fred frowned slightly in confusion. “The victim is my wife”

“Oh… thank you, Mr Grassi” Fred said and rushed off with his colleague.

Jayden turned to face Isabella only to find her already staring at him curiously.

“No, no, don’t give me that look, I’m mad at you, young lady” he said.

Isabella wanted to argue, but the opening of the emergency room’s doors caught their attention.

“Family of the patient?” Doctor Faith asked, directing his question to Jayden.

“Yes, I’m her husband”
