You changed your perfume.”
It didn’t sound like a question, I stopped the hotness growing on my cheeks. He still remembered my old perfume.

“Yeah.”
I took a gulp from my wine as I prepared myself to tell him about Kayla.

“Chloe!”
I heard my mom’s voice, I turned around and smiled at my parents.

“Dad!”
I hugged him tightly, Tristan welcomed my parents before leaving.

I spoke to my parents for some minutes and left them to enjoy the party.
I searched for Tristan but he was nowhere to be seen.

“Hey, Scarlett,” I called one of the maids passing with empty champagne cups.

“Hi, Chloe.”

“Have you seen Tristan?”

“I saw him going upstairs.”

“Thank you.”
I said quickly and ran up the stairs.

I was relieved to find him in his room, he was changing his clothes.

“Hey.”
I said nervously and shut the door.

“Everything okay?”
He asked removing his white long-sleeved button-up shirt that had a red stain on it.

“Yeah, what happened?”

“Kayden spilled my drink on me, I just came up to change.”
He reached for another packet shirt and slid his arm.

I looked elsewhere to avoid any distraction at this moment.

“Are you sure you’re okay?”

“Ugh hmm.”
I hummed still looking elsewhere.

He walked to where I stood, he was standing too close and his shirt buttons were still undone, his neat abs and outlined V-line were in full view.

“Cassie, ” he used one finger to raise my chin making me meet his eyes.

“What’s wrong?”

“We need to talk,” I said and took a step back.

“Okay, I’m all ears.”

I swallowed and crossed my arm, I hope this goes well.

“I had twins, Kayden has a twin.”

“I had twins, Kayden is a twin.”

“What?” he mumbled staring at me without blinking.

“He has a sister,” I said rubbing my elbow like it could ease the feeling in my chest.

“Oh shit!”
He gr0Γ—ned turning away from me, he punched the wall next to the closet and mumbled another curse.

Well, that wasn’t the reaction I was expecting.

“Oh God, no.”
He gr0Γ—ned again and buried his face in his palms.

“Tristan?”

“Don’t say it, please don’t.”
He was about to break down, he took a sharp breath and ran his palm down his face in distress.
I was so confused.

“Tristan?”
I moved closer.

“She is dead, isn’t she? And it’s all my fault.”

“No, she is alive. Kayla is alive.”
He faced me looking so surprised. Why did he think she was dead?

“She is alive? My baby girl is alive?”
He took slow steps toward me still looking shocked but the happiness was radiating from the smile about to reach his face.

“Yes Tristan, she is not dead.”

“Oh my God, thank you.”
He wrapped his arms around me with a burst of joyful laughter, I was still lost.

“I am so happy to hear that, Cassie. I don’t think I will be able to stand the thought of losing another baby girl.”
He sounded relieved.

“Where is she? I wanna see her.”
He asked pulling away, he looked so excited and I was about to take the happiness and hope away.

“Uh…she’s in Cuba. You know, the place I had the twins?”

“Why?”
He looked pissed now.

“I couldn’t take care of both of them, so…” I took a glance at him and tried to say it.

“So what happened, Cassie? Is she in trouble?”

“I gave her up for adoption,” I said quickly.

“You what?”

“I couldn’t do it, Tristan.”

“So you kicked her out of your life, you gave her away like she was nothing? You abandoned her.”

“No! For Christ’s sake. I. Didn’t. Abandon. Her!”

“You took Kayden with you and left his sister. You gave his sister to another family, Cassie, that’s….”
He paused and closed his mouth.

“Is what? Cruel? Unfair? Say it!”
I dared him.

He turned away from me and walked into the closet.

“I know I was wrong to pick Kayden and leave his sister, I had no money to take care of both of them. It was better than watching them suffer.”
I said behind him as he grabbed a small suitcase and threw some clothes in,side.

“What are you doing?”

“I’m going to Cuba to get my daughter.”
He said sternly.

“We can’t, we can’t get her back once she is adopted; it’s the law.”

“To hell with the law, I’m going to get my daughter.”

“It’s impossible,” I said with tears in my eyes.

He pretended not to hear me and kept packing. He zipped the suitcase when he was done and walked past me to the room.

He buttoned his shirt and wore his jacket, he picked his phone and made a call.

“Get my jet ready, I will be there in twenty minutes.”
He ended the call before the person could say a word.

“Tristan,” I called stepping closer.

“I really wish there is something we can do to get her back, but we have no option.”

“There has got to be a way to get her back, I’m getting her back no matter the cost.”

“Okay, I will get my things.”
I told him before leaving the room, I packed my things into a small bag. I didn’t know how he was planning on getting Kayla back from her new home.

I changed into white skinny jeans and a maroon top. I put on my white trainers quickly and left the room.

Tristan was waiting at the stairs glancing at his wristwatch. He started walking down the stairs immediately he saw me, he didn’t wait for me to reach where he was or even close to where he was.

All eyes turned to us when we got off the stairs, Tristan didn’t care. He made his way to the door not saying anything. I searched for Nora to tell her to watch over Kayden.

“Chloe, ” Mrs. Sanchester called stopping me.

“What’s going on? What’s with the bags?”

“It’s a long story, I will explain everything when I get back. Please take good care of Kayden and sorry for leaving the party like this.”
I said in one breath and rushed out of the house, I heard my mom’s voice but I didn’t have time to wait.

“Chloe!”
Vina called from behind me.

“I will call you and explain everything!”
I yelled back and entered the car.

I stared at her as the car moved, Adrian came out and stood next to her.
They both watched us as we left.

πŸ’˜ chapter 17πŸ’˜

I turned to look at Tristan when we were far from the Sanchester Mansion.
He was resting his head back with his eyes closed and drumming with his fingers on his th-gh.

I took a glance at Eduardo who was driving us to the airport and kept my gaze outside the window.

Tristan rushed out of the car as soon as it came to a halt at the parking lot.

We were escorted to the jet waiting for us. The air hostess welcomed us in with a stunning smile, I hated bob but this lady rocked the hairstyle.

I looked around the interior, it was beautiful and very classy. The shiny wood showed my reflection, I took a seat and put on the seatbelt.

Tristan sat in front of me, he undid the buttons on his jacket and leaned back on the seat not caring about the seatbelt.

He closed his eyes and stayed quiet.

“How exactly do you plan on getting her back? And stop treating me like this is all my fault.”
I said as I felt the plane move.

“I never blamed you for anything, let’s enjoy the flight.”
He said with his eyes still closed.

The air hostess came by and asked me what I’d like to drink or eat. I went for a sandwich and orange juice, she called Tristan but he didn’t answer her.

It was a short flight, a black Porsche was waiting for us when we arrived.
Being back in Cuba was inciting, the familiar air and places made me burst in excitement.

Cuba was a beautiful country, I had fun and good memories here. I smiled as we drove by a store, I went shopping for the twins in the same store.

I wanted to tell Tristan about some of the places but he still had his head back and his eyes closed.

We were going to crash at the hotel tonight and go over to the place tomorrow.

The silence between us was killing me, he hadn’t said a word since we arrived. The elevator ride was quiet, the hotel worker carrying our bags looked uncomfortable.

“Thank you.”
I said to the skinny guy after he dropped our bags in the suite. I locked the door and turned around, Tristan was taking off his clothes.

He walked to the bathroom only on his brief, soon I heard the sound of the shower.

I undressed and tied the white towel I found in the bathroom cabinet around me. I packed my hair in a messy bun, I turned on the tap in the bathtub and went to brush my teeth.

I entered the bathtub when I was done brushing, the foams swallowed me from neck down. I rest my head back and relaxed.

I opened my eyes when the shower door opened, I watched him as he grabbed a towel and tied around his w–st.

He stood in front of the mirror and dried his hair.

“So, how long are you planning to ignore me?”
I asked.

“I’m not ignoring you.”
That was all he said and left the bathroom.

I rinsed my body and came out. He was not in the bedroom when I entered the room. I wore my sweatpants and a white t-shirt. I decided to look around, I found him in the living room sleeping on the couch.

I rinsed my body and came out. He was not in the bedroom when I entered the room. I wore my sweatpants and a white t-shirt. I decided to look around, I found him in the living room sleeping on the couch.

“I’m sorry,” I said standing two feet away, I wasn’t sure if he was still awake. I waited for him to say something but he didn’t.

I went back to the bedroom and slept alone on the King-sized bed.

βˆ†
It was past ten in the morning, we were at the dining having breakfast, actually, I was the only one eating.
Tristan said he wasn’t hungry, he was waiting for me to finish so we could leave, I could sense his impatience.

He stared at me with his arms across his chest like he was observing me. We brushed the same time in the bathroom and didn’t say a word to each other.

“It’s been twenty minutes, Cassie. You don’t have to eat everything.”
He said with an aggravated sigh, that was the first thing he had said to me since we woke up.

“You should eat something, it might be a long day, besides the pancakes are very good, you should try it.”

I said instead.

“I will be waiting for you in the car,” he told me and left.

The ride to the adoption Agency was quiet. I kept staring outside the window at the familiar road.

I recalled that day, it was very sunny outside. I was sitting very close to Kayla who was asleep in her booster. I moved her closer to me to shield her from the sun.

I remember Mrs. Rodriguez and her husband trying to talk me out of it but I told them I wasn’t going to change my decision. I left Kayden with their daughter, Katrina.

The lady we spoke to when we got there gave me an hour to think about my decision because after signing the papers, there was no turning back.

All I felt was guilt as I held Kayla in my arms but I also felt like I was making the right decision to give her a better life.

I did all the paperwork and agreed to all their terms. I held my tears back as they took her away from me. I cried throughout the ride home.

“Cassie,” someone touched my arm making me jolt from my old memories.
I turned to look at Tristan who looked worried and confused.

“Huh?” I mumbled.

“You’re crying,” he said trying to touch my face but I turned away.

“I’m fine, my eyes just feel itchy.”
I said with a fake laugh and wiped them away.

The car came to a halt when he opened his mouth to say something.

“We are here, Sir.”
The chauffeur announced.

I looked outside at the familiar building.

“Are you ready?” He asked me.

“Yes,” I nodded.

We came down from the car. I took a deep breath and exhaled to calm myself.

“Cassie,” Tristan called stopping in front of me.

“I’m sorry, I know I have been acting like a jerk since you told me about Kayla. It’s just…this is too much for me to take in and I want you to know I don’t blame you for anything that happened.”
He said.
“Okay, let’s go.”
I said and headed for the entrance.

The receptionist at the lobby gave us a smile as we approached her.

“Good morning, how can I help you?” she said chirpily.

“Hi, we are here to see Mrs. Maria Lopez.”
Thank God I still remembered her name.

“I’m so sorry but she passed away three months ago.”

“Ohh,” I mumbled.

“Would you like to meet the new owner?”

“Yes please,” Tristan replied.

“I will make you an appointment, it will probably take an hour since she has three people on the list to see.”

“Thanks.”

“You’re welcome.”

We waited for an hour before we were called to her office. She was a tall woman and had a pretty hairstyle. She smiled at us as we entered her office. There were pictures of babies of different races and quotes about giving a child a safe home and a bright future.

“Hi, welcome,” she greeted.

“Or do you speak Spanish?”

I could speak Spanish but I wasn’t sure about Tristan.

“English is fine,” I said taking a seat.

“I’m Dr. Aracelly Mendoza, nice to meet you.”

“Nice to meet you too,” I said with a smile.

“How may I help you?”

“Umm…I gave my daughter up for adoption two years ago to this Agency.”

“Okay?”

“We came here to see if we can…umm…if we can…”

“Get her back,” Tristan finished the sentence for me.

The smile on Dr. Aracelly’s face vanished. She looked angry all of a sudden.

“I’m sorry but I’ll have to ask you both to leave.”
