Cassandra’s pov πŸŽ‹πŸŽ„

“You’re such a good girl, I thought you’d abandon me and take off, like most people would done in cases like this” she said.

I simply nodded my head dumbly and smiled foolishly, like I had been doing.

Seriously, I’m barely hanging on, it’s like she’s breathing my air right now… she’s been talking non-stop.

Vero is a big nag, but trust me she can win over this woman in a competition. I wonder how her family copes with her, like I would die of suffocation.

But she’s a jolly woman though, listening to her words, I could tell how much she cares for her nephew.

Like we’ve spent twenty minutes here already, and all she’s been doing, is telling me about her nephew and how great he is…her words showed her affection for him.

Which made me come to a conclusion, she doesn’t have her own child, hence she’s transfer all her love to her nephew.

I wish I have great relatives like her, mine are just bunch of hooligans and sour grapes!

“You’re so cute, I can imagine how cute baby face, you must be so cute when you’re baby..right?”

“Yeah” I replied, I chuckled when I recalled a particular photo of me. “I have a photo here”

“Wow! I wanna see” she said.

I nodded and quickly searched my bag, then pulled it out and handed it to her…she stared at it and burst into laughter.

“Oh my goodness! Is this you, dear?” she asked.

“Yeah, I find it cute and funny, so I always carry it along with me” I answered.

“Why would you dress up like this? How old were you?” she asked.

My brain twitched and I quickly flashed back to the event, I couldn’t help but crack up a bit.

“I was eight years old, it’s our school costume day and I thought dressing up as tortoise would be…er, unique..”

She laughed at my choice of words, and snout quietly.

“..but obviously it wasn’t, I ended up making myself a laughing stock and I burst into tears, when I couldn’t take the mockery from my mates anymore…my good parents thought it’s fun, so they took a photo”

I sighed, my mind briefly flashed back, I recalled how my mom was trying to make me smile…but I was too sad.

“Staring at the photo now, I kinda realized why they thought it’s fun”

Photos are the only thing, that can help our minds remember the most important things to us.

“If you weren’t dressed up in a tortoise costume, you wouldn’t have being this cute…I love this photo” she said.

“Aunt, you’re laughing at me” I whined, pouting my l-ips.

“No, I’m not, you’re very cute here, I wish you’re my daughter” she said.

I chuckled lightly.

“You wouldn’t wanna have me as your daughter” I muttered under my breath, so she won’t hear it.

Nothing good has ever happened to me since I was born, something bad always happens to me every 24th and God had always been so kind to me…he always sends an helper to come save me.

I guess I’m a cursed child, I’ve caused so many people pains and most especially, I’ve hurt myself too…my parents are gone because of me.

“Are you ok?” she asked me.

Her question brought me back to reality, I quickly wore a smile.

“Yeah”

I looked at my wrist watch, it’s already 7:37pm, four minutes more and she’d be good to go.

“It’s almost time, my nep….”

“Aunt!” A very familiar voice cut her off.

My head quickly raised on its own, my jaw dropped, my eyes grew bigger than the size of an orange and my mouth fell opened as Jayden comes into view.

No, it’s not true! Don’t tell me Jayden is the nephew she’s been talking about all these while!

But he’s a divorcee, why she said he’s taken? Is he seeing someone else?

“Oh, my baby boy is here!” she exclaimed excitedly.

“Aunt, how many times will I tell you to stop running about!” Jayden said in a scolding tone.

He hasn’t seen me yet, because his attention was wholly on his aunt since he walked in.

“I wasn’t running about, your uncle is coming tomorrow and I just wanna surprise him” she said.

“You don’t have to surprise him, or you can get someone to get whatever you need…you shouldn’t be doing these things yourself”

He sat beside her and started checking her wounds, he sighed when he’s done checking.

“Fortunately, it wasn’t so bad, what would I have told uncle? That I couldn’t take care of my aunt on his behalf?”

She pulled him into a side hug and k-ssed his right cheek, she pinched his cheeks softly.

“I know you’re worrying about me, but don’t worry, I’m fine”

Jayden scoffed, he folded his arms on his chest.

I stood numbly, staring at their display of affections…hey, don’t get it twisted, it’s a kind of mother and son affection though…not the other way round.

“Right, this is the beautiful girl who brought me here” his aunt said, gesturing towards me.

Jayden turned to me, he sprang up immediately he saw it was me. His wh0le face suddenly lit up instantly, like a kid who just saw his favourite candy…he broke into a smile.

“It’s you, baby?” He asked, walking towards me.

But I took two steps back and he halted, his brows furrowed but the smile didn’t leave his face.

“Baby?” His aunt asked.

“Yeah, she’s my….”

“I’m his personal assistant!” I interrupted him quickly in a professional tone.

He gave me a questioning look, but I looked away from him and faced his aunt.

“Oh, so you both know each other, what a small world” his aunt said.

“Yeah…I’m sorry I didn’t come back to the office, I got carried away” he told me.

He got carried away?

Then I suddenly recalled how he rushed out, saying he had something very Important to do…maybe he wasn’t referring to the girl he’s seeing, he must have gone to see her.

He took another step towards, but I stepped back again and he frowned more.

“What’s wrong with you?” he asked.

“Nothing, sir” I answered.

He frowned and stared at me with a confused expression, I kept my face blank.

“Jayden, I’m telling you, your assistant is such a humble girl” his aunt said.

He turned his attention back to his aunt, he smiled at her.

“Really?” he asked and glanced at me.

“Yes, if we weren’t already making plans for your wedding with Merry, I would have matched you two…”

Merry? Who’s Merry? His family already know the girl? And they are thinking of making her his bride already?!

My chances are gone!

My mind ran wild immediately, as I let different thoughts come into my mind.

I turned towards him, as if I’m waiting for him to give me some kind of explanation. He noticed my eyes on him and my sour expression, then he turned back to his aunt and cleared his throat.

“…she spoke to me so respectfully, like she was talking to her mother and even though this was the first time we met, she was so worried about me…”

“Aunt, Merry and I aren’t gonna….”

“Don’t interrupt me” she scolded him. “…maybe I should introduce her to Stephen” his aunt said, she’s referring to me.

She giggled happily and clapped her hands.

“She and Stephen are gonna make a good match”

“Aunt, I don’t….”

His aunt cut him off with a glare, she turned to me and reached for my hands.

“Can you consider my nephew’s friend, Stephen?” she asked, I didn’t answer before she continued. “He’s a nice guy, he’s not as moody as my nephew, he’s more smiley and outgoing, you…”

My eyes moved towards Jayden, I was hoping he’d say something but he didn’t..he was just sighing and shaking his head.

Ok…I can’t take any of this anymore, I need to get outta here or I’m gonna burst into tears.

I forced a smile on my face, then gently withdrew my hands from his his aunt’s.

“Aunt, it’s getting late, I guess I should be on my way now that your nephew is here” I said.

Her eyes zeroed on my wrist watch, she nodded.

“Yes, yes, you’re right”

Jayden stepped forward, he wanted to reach for my bag, but I moved it away from his reach.

“You can come with us, I’ll drop you off” he said.

“No, thank you, I will take a cab”

“But there’s traffic every….”

I toned him off and faced his aunt, I waved at her and bide her goodnight, then rushed out.

VERONICA’S TEAHOUSE

The small bell at the entrance door, jingled loudly as I walked into the cafe.. feeling like transferring my aggression on it, I pushed it roughly and it fell off it’s position.

Vero was sitting on one of the chairs, she snapped her head towards me…she glared at me.

The cafe is empty, which means she’s closed and just doing accounts now.

“Yo! Yo! Yo! someone is gloomy” she said.

I ignored her and pulled a chair, I sat next to her and rested my head on the table while she does her account.

“Had a bad day?” she asked.

“Hm” I hummed.

“Wanna talk about it?” she asked again.

“Nope, it’s not worth talking about” I answered.

“Oh”

We stayed in a comfortable silence, only the sound of her keyboards as she does her calculations, were heard.

I lifted my head, rested my elbows on the table and rested my head on my palms.

“Anything interesting happened today at work? Did you finally resigned?” she asked.

“I didn’t resign”

“I knew you won’t”

“Hm” I hummed. “Today was just too crazy for me, a lot of things happened and I discovered someone’s secret”

At the mentioned of someone’s secret, Vero stopped her accounting and gave me her wh0le attention… she’s such a gossip.

“Whose secret did you discover? Is it a very dirty secret?” she asked.

“Well, it depends on how you describe dirty secrets” I answered.

She grinned widely.

“Ooh! I love dirty secrets!” she exclaimed. “Tell me, tell me”

“I can tell you but I need to get rid of some craziness..my head is overloaded and I feel like it’s gonna explode soon”

Finding out about Jayden getting married to another woman, is kinda taking an emotional toll on me… I need something to help me take my mind off him.

Wait, I shouldn’t be feeling this sad or heartbroken, he was never mine to begin with.

“I know how to help you get over today’s craziness” she said.

“How?”

“Movies, let’s have a movie marathon in my room tonight” she said.

My l-ips quirked up in a smile at her words, she always knows how to make me smile.

“Let’s do it” I told her.
