The deed episode 3 – 4
TITLE: THE DEED
THEME: BUMPER TO BUMPERđđ
EPISODE 3
âPraise the Lordâ the church chorused âAlleluiaâ
âMy name is Yetunde Badmus. I have come to testify of what God did in the life of my daughter through the daddy in the lord. My daughter came to see daddy yesterday over a problem she had and daddy said she was emere. In order to deliver her, he has to have sĂĂ with herâ there was noise and commotion in the church. âI have not finished. You see these men here are army officers in plain clothes, if you attempt to stop this testimony, you will be arrested in the presence of your congregation.â The protocol and usher who wanted to wrestle the microphone from her hand stepped back. âHe asked her to kneel down for prayers. She obeyed. During the prayer, he was fondling her brĂĂsts. My daughterâs brĂĂsts. God will punish you. You young ladies he has been deceiving and sleeping with I am sorry for you. Mothers that send their daughters to him; now you know what he has been doing with them. You messed with the wrong womanâs child. Pick him up. Let him stay in the guard room for 10 days before he is released.â
Labake sat on her seat speechless. This was not what she was expecting from her mother. She watched as the army boys were dragging âdaddyâ out of the church and he was begging. She was scared if this was not too much.
âMa, is this not too much?â
âShould I wait till he rapes you or other girls before he is dealt with? Did you see the wife move from her chair? Did you hear her stand in his defence? Did she cry or beg? She knew what was going on and she is happy someone has helped deal with the situation. You need to toughen up Labake.â
âYou are right ma. What next?â
âWe are going to the hospital tomorrow.â
The next morning, they were the first patients Dr Obiora saw. He was shocked to see Labake back and was more shocked to see her with her mother.
âYou are back. What can I do for you? Ma?â
âI want you to complete the procedure.â
âShe refused to allow me complete it the last time. Is she ready now?â
âShe is. I am here. Can you check her before we move to the theatre?â
âCheck her for what?â
âCheck if her cervix is tight?â
âWe will sort that out in the theatre. You will have to wait for me to finish consultation before the procedure can be done.â
âHow long do we have to wait?â
âProbably two hours.â
âWe will wait.â
Dr Obiora was looking at her but she showed no expression on her face. She couldnât wait to see what her mother had up her sleeves.
She was called into the theatre. Her mother asked her to go ahead and not be afraid. She went in, got ready for the operation. Dr Obiora came to her and said,
âI thought you were angry the last time. Your cervix softens and opens after sĂĂ. I just helped you. If you want I will help you.â He began to fondle her again and just as he was about to penetrate her, her mother burst into the room with some area boys, police officers and someone with a camera. His pictures with his pant down and his surprised face were taken.
âStrip him naked and take him around this community and let them know he is a rapist. If you investigate, you will discover that my daughter is not the only one he has done this with. He has to be dealt with. Take him away. We are taking the case to court. Bloggers will have a field day with your pictures.â
Dr Obiora couldnât believe what had befallen him. How could he have gotten himself into this mess? The way he was beaten to strip naked and then paraded around the community as a rapist reduced him to nothing. Even with that, he was still charged to court. He was not a young man. His children should never get to know about this. His wife will leave him for good this time. Why was he attracted to this witch? Why?
Labake was amazed at the steps her mother took against the doctor. It felt so good. She was particularly happy about the fact it was all happening without her prior knowledge; she would have spoilt everything. Why couldnât she be more like her mother?
âThe next person now is the father of the child in your womb. I want you to resume work and get me as much information as you can get on him. I mean as much as possible. I will take it from there.â
âI trust you ma. What will I have done without you? I am eternally indebted to you. Words fail me to show my appreciation.â
âYou are the one taking nonsense from men. How would you allow men use you like this? Where did you learn to be a goody two shoes? Anyway, by the time I am through with that man, we will talk more.â
The next day, she used some people to gather enough information about Dayo. He married a young lady from Rivers state, who was in her final year and she was expecting. She sent all the information she got to her mother who dug further and got all she needed to act. She called Labake to be at her house on Friday night for their âoperationâ on Saturday morning.
EPISODE 4
Saturday morning, as early as 6:30 am, they were in front of a house she wasnât familiar with. They banged on the gate rousing everyone and creating a scene. The family was initially afraid that robbers were in the compound but when they noticed people had gathered at their gate, they came out to find out what the problem was.
âIs that how you have brought up your son? Irresponsible son from an irresponsible family. You got your son married at old age to a young girl still he would not leave women alone. A woman who refused his advances, he made a friend, then got her drunk and raped her.â
âWhat nonsense is this? Is that why you came to our house this early in the morning? If your daughter is so shameless to go out with a married man whatever she sees let her carry.â Dayo mother shouted back at her.
âI was told that this would be your reaction. Your son is completely shameless and you encourage him. No wahala. He has gotten my daughter pregnant. I have taken the case to the Ministry of Women affairs because in my family we donât abort. So I have brought his second wife to you. Labake kneel down and greet your inlaws. If he says he is not responsible and DNA proves he is, I will sue him. This is just the beginning.â
âWho do you think you are? You come to my house early in the morning to threaten us. If your daughter allowed herself to be used by my son, how are we to be blamed?â
âDid I say you are to blame? I said your son is just like you. I have brought his wife. I thought by now he would be here to prove me wrong but he has refused to show. A responsible family would invite us in and hear what we have to say but an irresponsible family like yours wonât do that. You prefer shame to dignity. We are waiting.â
It wasnât panning out as Labake anticipated. She was scared now. What if Dayo comes, threatens and behaves like his mother? What if he dares her mother? Her mother seemed to be in control but she was still scared. As her mind wondered, Dayo landed. He joined his mother looking angry. She hid further. Her mother made her cover herself like a Muslim so people canât take pictures of her.
âWho are the mad people accusing me? Who are the crazy people disturbing my family?â
âWhat did I say? Like mother like son! I am the one. Do you know my daughter?â Labakeâs mother asked moving away so she could be seen. Dayo was dumbfounded. He couldnât believe it was Labake. Her mother continued, âOh, you know her. Those few minutes you had sĂĂ with her without her consent has brought forth result. You did it to her without protection and the evidence will finally come forth in seven monthsâ time. Like I told your parents, we do not abort where we come from; ewo ni, abomination! You will marry her as second wife. Your wives will deliver in the same year and you will be responsible for them.â
âCan we go in,side and discuss this is issue?â Dayo asked Iya Labake calmly. Labake was shocked at his calmness.
âYou see Iya Dayo, he wants us to go in,side and discuss. Shouldnât you have invited us in to avoid this scene? By the way, the scene was deliberate to get him and some other people here. It worked. Omo mi Labake enter in,side.â
When they had all settled down to discuss, there was a knock on the door.
âTa ni yen this early morning? Come in.â Dayoâs mother bellowed at the person at the door.
Dayo almost peed in his pants when he saw who came in. It was his wife and her parents. What can be worse than this?
âOur iyawo, what are you doing here? Our in-laws, what brought you here?â
âWe were invited to come and resolve an issue this morning. We had to ask our daughter to come back since it has something to do with her husband.â Dayoâs father-in-law replied her.
âMadam, arenât you taking this too far? You have not complained to us but you have orchestrated the disgrace of our son. Why are you doing this.â Dayoâs mother asked Labakeâs mother in a humble tone.
âPlease take your seat Dayoâs in-laws. I waited for you to come before we began.â She allowed them to settle in seeing the confusion on their faces. Labake was now more worried at what her mother had planned to achieve here. She was ashamed of being portrayed as being pregnant by a married man. Her mother continued,
âI am a mother. When anyone hurts my young, I become a lioness. I can kill for my young. My daughter cried to me. She was in a relationshÂĄp with a man. They were taking it easy. He never took her to his house but he treated her very well. He invited her to a bachelorâs eve. He forced her to take alcohol. She became tipsy and asked to go home. He said he couldnât take her home or call a cab that late at night. He took her to the room he had prebooked and allowed her sleep there. When she woke up, he was having sĂĂ with her. She tried to get him to stop but she couldnât. Immediately he finished, she dressed up and left that night. Although they were in a relationshÂĄp, she was not ready for sĂĂ. It was later she found out that the man whom she was dating was married with a child on the way.â
âDayo, what is she talking about?â Dayoâs wife asked.
âWe have evidence of the relationshÂĄp. Pictures they took and CCTV footage of the lunches and dinners they had together. He never told her he was married. He is wearing a wedding ring now but when he was on dates with her, he never wore the ring. She told him all the issues she had in her previous relations and he still took advantage of her.â
âHow are we sure she didnât know? How are we sure he had sĂĂ with her?â Dayoâs mother asked.
âShe is pregnant. He had unprotected sĂĂ with her even when he knew he had a pregnant wife. What was he expecting? She thought he had used protection and now she is saddled with the responsibility of a child she didnât plan for. I have gotten all the information including what time she left the hotel and you will see she was in tears. If you doubt us; when it gets to court, you will watch it.â
âDayo ti pa mi. Dayo, why?â His mother asked.
For the first time his father spoke, âMadam, the deed has been done. If you had brought this issue to us alone, we would have resolved it. What do you want now?â
âDayo must marry my daughter. She did not plan to have the baby; he forced it on her so he has to take full responsibility for his action.â
âWhat!â Dayoâs wife exclaimed and walked out. Dayo went after her and so did her mother. Dayo was stopped from leaving the compound by some fierce looking men in black. He had no choice but to go back in.
âWhat you are asking for is impossible madam. My son is already married and cannot marry another. The only other option is for her to have the baby and we will care for it.â Dayoâs father replied.
âCare for it how? By giving us stipends? She did not intend to have a child so he canât go scot-free. He must be responsible for her by marrying her. If she is good enough to date and have sĂĂ with then she is good enough for a wife.â
âThis is serious. I canât believe what I am hearing. Dayo you? After everything I have done for you? Is this how you repay the family?â Dayoâs father-in-law asked.
âIt was the devil. I donât know what got over me.â
âWhat she said is it true? Did you have sĂĂ with the lady while she was intoxicated?â
âYes sir. I was also intoxicated myself. I didnât know when I did it.â
âYou didnât know when you booked the room and took her there? This was pre-meditated. You planned it. Now see the outcome. It is your fault. You have all the blame. You just got married and you are still sowing your wild oats. What is wrong with you?â
âPlease forgive me sir. I am sincerely sorry. I donât know what came over me. Mami, bami, eshu ni, it is the devil. Please help me beg my in-laws.â
âWhich of your in-laws are you begging because you now have two in-laws.â Labake mother added.
âAt this junction, I have to take my leave.â Dayoâs father-in-law walked out of the house.
