CHAPTER SIXTEEN: THE BALL 8
Muchen sits down and watch how she struggled in her sleep, her eyes shaking a little, hands grabbing the sheets “Please don’t!” She screams, tears dropping from her eyes “Don’t touch me!”
Averting my gaze from her, I look back at the book in my hands, it’s just a silly nightmare, she will wake up eventually. My gaze didn’t wander in her direction anymore, my mind could not even remain focused on the book either, I know ghouls, they are not the kind to leave their victims alone.
It’s even difficult to make a deal with one, how did Jing escape, looking back at her, I stand to my feet, move towards the bed, sit on it, and watch how she sweats and cries” What happened to you Jing?” Having enough of her screams, I hold her hand, pull her up, and in that process, she wakes up.
Sweats on her forehead, she looks at me and quickly cleans her tears “Milord” her gaze meets mine ” am probably disturbing you, I should go to my quarters ”
” Jing ” looking at her, I frown “Are you hiding something from me?”
” What do you mean?”
” I know ghouls Jing”
” Ghouls?” She look at me confused “What are ghouls ”
” Creatures that eat humans” Frowning I mumble ” How did you escape from him without my help? ” The question I asked seemed to upset her
” I told you, I can handle myself “Her eyes couldn’t meet mine ” They were nothing like a ghoul either, we just fell into a river filled with crocodiles on our way to the tailor shop ”
” What your coachman said was completely different”
” Get off my case Muchen ” I watch her stand to her feet but the moment she did, her balance must have crumbled a little, resulting in her falling right back to the bed
” You haven’t recovered ” mumbling, I cup her face with my right hand and make her look at me “Tell me what you did Jing, and I will save you ” I watch how fragile she look at this moment” I promise ”
” I can’t trust you ”
” Why not ”
” Because you love another ” she slaps my hands off her face ” am pretty sure you hate me, why will you wish to help me?”
” I do not wish for your death, I do not want you out of my sight either ”
” What are you saying”
” Until I get hold of this ghoul, you will remain in my quarters” Her eyes widen at that “Your maid and Queen Xiang’s maid will remain in custody”
” You mean Fang ” I watch how her frown deepens ” Why will you arrest her ”
” It’s fishy Jing ” Standing to my feet, I fold my hands ” She went to the tailor shop, nothing happened, and came back unharmed but when you went there, things changed ”
” She has nothing to do with this ”
” I do not care ” I growl, shutting her up “Your safety comes first before anyone, and now I need you to shut up, lay on the bed, and sleep ”
” You don’t order me ”
” Today I do ”
” The ball ”
” You won’t be attending ”
” And then when they ask of your first wife?” She frowns
” Evening sickness, you’re pregnant anyway ”
” It’s too risky, I need you to release Fang” she stood to her feet ” I have plans, things I need to do in this ball, I can make it to the ball….am sure ”
” Jing ”
” Please ” I watch how serious she looks” I can’t miss this ball, my reputation is riding on it, I have to do something tonight”
” What are you planning “Her feet move closer to mine, and I look down to watch how she stares at me “Jing”
” Stop clinging close ” I furrow my brows at that ” I won’t be able to let you go if you did ”
” That’s where you’re wrong Jing ” I place my hand under her jaw and lean close ” am not letting you go, one day that I decided to look away, you almost got killed ”
” What is this?” She fakes a chuckle “Do you worry for me now? Or do you care ”
” Don’t get full of yourself ” I smile “The moment I get to that damn woman and set this situation am in” I kiss her cheek before finishing my sentence ” I will have you out of my life ”
” That’s scary” she step back ” I don’t care anymore ” After that I watch her take two steps away but I just didn’t have it in me to let her go, grabbing her hand, she turn around, giving me a confused look” what now?”
” I thought you love me ” Why am I asking this?”
I watch how her cheek redden “Maybe I don’t anymore ”
” Impossible” I pull her close “How can you stop loving someone so fast ”
” What is it to you ” I never knew she was this strong, her power even in this state was able to push me back ” is not like you care ”
” I don’t “Frowning I look at her ” I just don’t want you to stop ”
” I never said I love you anymore “Looking at her eyes, she avert them ” am just obsessed, it’s just obsession ”
” Whatever it is ” I turn her face back to meet mine as I lean close ” It shouldn’t stop ”
” You confuse me milord ” her voice is low as I kiss her cheek, very close to her lips, am down on blood, if I kiss her, am pretty sure I will bite her tongue to get more blood but she needs rest and healing.
Her blood just tastes so good, I just want to relax on her and keep inhaling it, placing my hands on her waist, I pull her closer and then hide my face in her neck
” Lord Muchen?”
” Few minutes ”
” What are you doing?” Closing my eyes, I try calming myself, bringing my tongue out I lick her neck softly ” I haven’t washed off!” She growl but I didn’t stop, if I don’t withdraw this minute, am sure I will bite her.
Just a little won’t hurt, right? Just a little taste of her blood, I can’t stop myself ” Jing ” I said in the form of a moan, my fang elongating but at the same minute, the guards outside announced the arrival of Queen Xiang.
I step back, mouth closed, Jing shoots me a strange look” You called for Xiang?” That’s the look of jealousy, but before I could defend myself, she left and I exhale, feeling exhausted.
Haven’t taken blood for a while now, and it’s having its effect on me, sitting on my bed I mumble “Let her in” The doors open, and queen xiang step in, I stare at her, she has long dark hair and brown eyes. She is beautiful.
Not compare to Jing tho.
The moment that thought came to my head, I frown, what am I thinking? Yes Jing is beautiful but I shouldn’t compare her, have I gone nuts?
” Milord ” she bends down, head bow ” I will ask to ask for a favor ”
” You certainly don’t need to ask like this, you’re my wife ” I reply which made her sit up and look me in the eyes, she has beautiful eyes, unlike Jing. And now am back to comparing “What is it ”
” I wish to spend the night with you ” I frown at her word ” I fear that someone is watching me ”
” Watching you?” My laughter cane surprising “Don’t be ridiculous, the guards are there ”
” Milord I…..”
” Queen Xiang, don’t use such a silly excuse to sleep in my bed, am not free tonight, Queen Jing will be staying here ”
” Queen Jing?” I watch how she got angry at the name.
” You may leave ”
” Milord?”
” Xiang ” I give her a cold glare ” Get out “and with that, she left, but her words remain in my head, someone watching her? Jing escaping the ghoul.
That’s preposterous, it can’t be connected.

CHAPTER SEVENTEEN & EIGHTEEN: THE BALL 9 ( HER CURSE )
” Fang, are you okay?” I asked the moment Li-mu brought her back, she look so pale and beaten up, moving close to her, I couldn’t help but hold her hand “Fang”
” Please forgive me ” she cried ” I have no idea he was dangerous, I didn’t plan to kill you or anything of that sort, please trust me ”
” Fang, calm down” mumbling, a smile came easily to my face ” I trust you completely, and right now, I need the old Fang back, the ball is about to start visitors are coming in and you’re the only one I can trust ”
” Milady ” confusion dawned on her face “What happened ”
” Something is going to happen fang and I need your assistance” Standing up, I pull out a bag of red paint underneath my bird ” I need to fake a miscarriage and I trust you already talk to my physician?”
Fang stands to her feet “Yes milady, he is ready to say the miscarriage was from your lunch”
” And now they will think I was poisoned ”
” Yes milady ”
” And the abortion pill?”
” Queen Mona took the morning pill this morning”
” It should all happen this evening and then yours will commence tomorrow morning ”
” Brilliant” Smiling, I push back the paint and then look at the dark sky ” I did something bad fang, I did something bad ”
” Milady ” her voice filled with concern ” what’s the issue ”
” It’s not just obsession anymore “My gaze travels back to Fang ” I want them all dead, the queen mother, Xiang, Hua, Mona, and Li-cha……every single one of them ”
” What happened to you ”
” I met someone that eats humans, he feeds on us as we do to animals and I strike a deal “Tears drop from my tears “Very soon, he will take me away, turning me into his kind ”
” Milady!” Fang rush to my side and hold my hand ” We should tell the king, he will help, trust me, he will help you ”
” Fang ” shaking my head, my breath came out easier” The king doesn’t care about me, he won’t wish to help ”
” Milady ”
” You must be tired fang, ask the other maids to arrange my bath, I should get ready ”
” Please be careful my queen “Fang stepped close and surprisingly hug me out of nowhere ” I don’t wish to ever lose you ”
” Fang ”
” Am sorry milady ” she withdraw, tears evident in her tears “You’re just like my elder sister that died, you look so much like she, and I don’t wish to lose another ”
” Is okay fang ” Getting up, I look at my dresses ” I won’t die “Not now, not ever…..I will do whatever it takes for me to remain alive, I will kill whoever I need to kill.
Am not kind-hearted nor am I fragile and I don’t get the boy either. I shouldn’t let someone take what I only have, my life is mine and no one else, if am to die then I will be the person predicting when that day will be “Do you think this green dress will suit me?”
” Everything suits you, my queen ”
” Very funny fang ”
I took forty minutes to finish getting ready, I sit down, staring at my reflection while the maids set my hair with pins and flowers “What do you think this ball will be like?”
” I heard nobles and royals all over town will be coming to congratulate Queen Mona ” one of the maids reply and I smile, this ball will be a memorial and not just for the people, especially for Mona ” We are done my queen, excuse us ”
They step outside and I look through the window again, feeling anxious, will it come? Will he do as I ask? ” milady?” Fang’s voice brought me out of my thought “We should get going”
” Yes ” Leaving my quarters, I stare at the decorations and light radiating from the ball hall ” lord Norman is attending” I mumble out loud ” It’s been a long I see him ”
” Am pretty sure he misses you too milady “Fang whispered and I chuckled
” I don’t think so, we are just friends”
Arriving in the ball hall, I stare at the huge chandelier, different beautiful colors radiating, the music was top notch and then the food, the people, the dance, everything seem perfect
” Queen Jing ” I turn left and notice lord Norman walking close with two classes of champagne “How long has it been months?” Smiling, I collect the glass of wine
” I could count ” he chuckle at my response, he is the only hand I notice with short hair, light brown in color, and dark eyes ” You look pretty well ”
” Indeed milady “Those dark eyes of his has always been clear, too clear to read which makes you think he is misleading you for a purpose ” I have been going through changes, couldn’t find time to visit ”
” How tragic” I smile, we are not the best of friends but the very first day I arrive in this palace, I thought lord Norman was the king, the one I will marry, we talked and happened to share a very deep kiss before the truth dawn on me.
After that, we simply ignore each other and only share pleasantries ” I heard you’re pregnant”
” Yes ”
” Jing ” he steps closer, looking at me ” I know you aren’t,” I notice how those eyes monitor my breathing and to check if he is right
” Don’t be ridiculous ” I act less bothered ” You shouldn’t go around, spreading what you know nothing of ”
” You’re right ” Clearing his throat, he straight forth his hand “A dance?” I look at the dance floor, people are already there but then my eyes meet with a very angry-looking Muchen, Queen Mona is by his side but he kept looking at me.
I notice he shake his head, is he trying to stop me from dancing, how ridiculous “My pleasure” I place my hand in Norman’s, averting my gaze from Muchen, the dance was slow, his both hands on my waist while mine are on his shoulder ” this is rather a new way of dancing ”
” Indeed, we took it from England ” mumbling, he looks down at me “Even ball of a thing, don’t tell me you don’t talk to your husband about these things ”
” What are you implying” Frowning, I watch him chuckle
” Nothing milady ” his face fill right back with smiles ” You look beautiful tonight ”
” I know that ”
” You should have at least blush”
” You can’t make me blush ” replying, I look up to meet his gaze
” I did five years ago,” I notice he lift his hand and touch my face ” I wish you were mine Jing, I…..” He couldn’t complete his sentence when lord Muchen grab his hand, I look around and notice we have eyes staring at us
” Watch where you touch Norman ”
” Milord ” Norman bows his head while Muchen let go of his hand
Holding my hand, he pulls me away from Norman” Come, dances with me “Moving with the music I look at Muchen “What is it ?”
” You shouldn’t have done that “a frown was evident on my face ” We were only dancing ”
” He wanted to kiss you ”
” Why do you care?” Asking, I notice how his eyes even got more distant ” lord Muchen ”
” Jing, just stay away from him ”
” I won’t unless you give me a reasonable reason not to ”
” Jing ” he look so bothered that it confuse me ” I do not want someone else touching you, it messes with your heart, the flow of it and his scent will stick to your blood ”
” My blood?” I frown, stopped moving, and look at him “What are you saying, my blood, this is the second…..” Muchen kissed me, right in the middle of the ball and I know everyone is watching.
Is this his way of telling me to shut up, before I could react, he bite my tongue, a little too hard, I couldn’t scream out, he deepened the kiss and my hands tighten on his shirt, what is he doing? Everyone is watching.
” Muchen ” pulling back, I look at his red eyes ” What’s wrong?” I notice how he tries to catch his breath
” I have been without it for too long ” he mumbles but I can’t understand ” I need more of it, am losing my mind?”
” Milord ” Li-mu moved closer and I looked around, everyone is having a good time but the queens, they are staring with hatred “We need to take him to the balcony, he needs air ”
” What about the …..”
Li-mu cut me off “The queen’s mother will handle it, please take the king to the balcony,” I notice the urgency in his voice and I didn’t hesitate to help the king upstairs, to the balcony.
Shutting the door behind us, I watch how he moves out, closing his eyes and trying to calm himself ” Muchen, what is wrong ”
” Nothing ”
” Why won’t you share what troubles you!”
” Because you’re the cause of everything!!!” He growled back, turned around, glaring at me “If you never existed I won’t be going through this pain, I would have any blood I wanted and won’t have to worry about your death ”
” Why do you keep mentioning blood?” I frown “What do you mean ”
” Nothing,” I notice how his eyes go back to his dark color ” We should head back ”
” Milord?”
” Do not force me Jing ” He looks down at me “You do not want to know ”
” I do ” screams erupted from the ball hall, Queen Mona must be bleeding now, everyone keeps calling her name
” I suppose this is your doing” Muchen step closer and smile “You’re even more evil than I thought ”
” Here is a secret milord ” I look up at him and grin ” Another incident is incoming”
” You mean the ghoul ” he frown then chuckle, it was strange, why did he look happy, I wanted to say more but the door opened revealing queen Mona, I state at her, blood all over her lower body, she must have rush here
” You did this to me!!!” She tell ” I curse you!!!! My child’s blood is in your hands!!” I stare at how depressed she looks “You will never get one of your own ” she yells, falling and crying “You will never be able to birth a child”
I stand still, looking at how ruined she looks “It’s your fault ” I smile ” You messed with me ” few minutes passed before her maids run upstairs to grab her
” Jing ” I look up at Muchen and he surprisingly kisses my forehead, I blush “Did I tell you, you look beautiful?” Shaking my head, he smiles “You look ravishing milady, so evil ”
