A lot of the trials and tribulations of adolescence can be attributed to teenage love. Seemingly insignificant, teenage love can, in fact, mark the beginning of great, mature, and everlasting love or can be the opposite. Though the feelings of first love cannot be underrated. First love always seems like the next weekend would be your wedding day. Probability that was how Crucifix felt, but still didn’t know what he got himself into.

The poor boy, once again laid face-up on his bed after Raina’s departure from his house. He could only wonder the depression the girl must had been going through due to her sickness. He really felt pity for her. Just as he wallowed in thought, Geb’s walking-stick at the door startled him. His grandfather’s expression and mood seemed worried and unhappy.

“What’s it, Papa?” he broke the silence.

The old man kept mute and supported his standing posture with his stick.

Crucifix sat up from the bed, gazing at his old man to let the cat out of the bag.

“Crucifix Odinakachukwu” Geb fully called him. The manner and tone in which he called did not only tell Crucifix that there’s fire on the mountain, it was also a notification for the cricket to behold that something bigger than it is making its way to the hole. So Crucifix swallowed hærd, still waiting for his grandfather to break the shell, at least, in a nutshell.

“I overheard you and Raina. Is it true you’ve performed your first Lovcilia?” Geb asked him calmly.

Crucifix bent his head scandalously. He couldn’t answer the question even though he knew the answer.

“How could you, Cross?” Geb sparked. “How could you be so stupid, so dumb, so lackadaisical, so languorous and feeble!”

“But I love her, papa? I love Margret” Crucifix found his voice.

Briskly, the grandfather walked to him. He placed his walking stick on his left hand and the right hand landed a slap on Crucifix’ cheek. It was more excruciating than that of Lucy. Damn! Crucifix couldn’t believe it! He looked up at his grandfather with red eyes which had started sprouting out tears.

“What do you know about love, Cross!!? What you’re having is teenage love, love at first sight! We’re talking about Lovcilia here, a ritual that you do for the only girl you know that must end up with you. A girl that must marry you otherwise die in quest of getting a ribbon of your ancestors!! Tell me, where will you get it if you don’t marry her? When will you understand that you’re a special kid, a descendant of Obra, the mind readers!? There are many things you do not do casually like other children! Oh, do you think it’s any girl you provide seven needs of her mind that will marry you? So pathetic!” he exhaled.

Crucifix stood up harshly. “She must eventually marry me. I only have to win her heart!” he retaliated.

“There you go again, stupid fool!! You’re just seventeen, a teenager with no sophisticated background! Before you get married that girl must have married and given birth to five children!” Geb paced around angrily which reflected on a candle light. He lowered his voice but sounded harshly as he continued. “Love is like playing the piano. First, you must learn to play by the rules, then you must forget the rules and play from your heart. Not everyone can get through it when reality hits them.”

“Papa, first love is only a little foolishness and a lot of curiosity. I’m just curious. Moreover, I know what I feel for her.” Crucifix said. Already the tears had started dropping.

“First love, with its frantic haughty imagination, swings its object clear of the day, over the rut of living, making him all looks, silences, gestures, attitudes, a burning phrase with no context. Good luck with your life, Cross?” he walked out from the room.

Now you know one of the reasons Crucifix needed to win Margret’s heart badly other than the unconditional love he had for her. Knowing who you want to end up with from teenaghood is way more complicated than anything. If that was the case in Crucifix’ life, I think I have to stick around till the very end of this story or his life.

The next day, Crucifix arrived to school to see it quiet like a grave yard. He was actually late due to the fight he had with his grandfather. Nevertheless, he walked into his classroom in the middle of a lesson. There stood Mr Williams beside a white board with the diagram of a human brain on it.

“Good morning, sir.” Crucifix hurried to his seat after greeting the teavher thereby drawing attention to himself. Seeing him, Margret remembered the incomplete complicated statement he made the previous day. She hadn’t figured out the meaning yet. She only wished she could.

“Mr. Odinaka,” Mr Williams called Crucifix by his surname. “We were saying that the part of the brain responsible for posture and movement is this..” he pointed at the board. “..medulla oblongata”

“What of the part that makes you fall in love?” Crucifix asked hilariously. Students chuckled.

“No part does that. Falling in love has to do with your mind?” Mr. Williams replied.

“Are you saying there are differences between the brain and the mind?” Another student asked.

“Of course! Biology gave us brain but life turned it into a mind.”

“But there will be no mind without brain?” Alice suggested.

“Negative.” Crucifix objected, looking at her. “The mind is the epicenter of life.”

“The mind is invisible, but the brain is.” She challenged, standing up.

Crucifix also stood up, glaring at her. “Literally, some people would say the mind comes as a result of what’s in the heart not brain.” he argued.

“The heart is just a muscular organ full of blood vessels. But the brain controls all daily activities which, as Mr Williams said, gives us the mind. Hence, the brain is the epicenter of life not the mind.” Alice never gave up.

“You said the mind is invisible, therefore it’s immortal, independent and beyond the physical. The last time i checked anything that has these qualities doesn’t need a medium like the brain to function.” Crucifix fired back.

“Is okay!!!” Mr Williams ended the argument.

However, all the students were already enjoying the intellectual challenge.

“Alright, this is what gonna happen. If you are supporting Mr. Odinaka that the mind can exit without the brain and it’s the epicenter of life put your hands up.”

Some students raised their hands including Lucy. Of course the three girls didn’t.

“Alright, if you’re on the opposition with Tanko Alice, put your hands up.”

Rose and some students also raised their hands. Only Margret didn’t support any of them.

“Miss Adenike Margret, who do you support.” Mr. Williams asked her?

The girl kept mute as the whole class stared at her. Truly, she should support her friend but on the other hand, Crucifix has mesmerized her brain judging from the incomplete statement which probably ended with ‘mind’. So she said, “I support the wood chopper.” she stared at Crucifix who returned the gaze happily. He couldn’t believe it!! That was a huge step to win her heart, but he never knew Margret joined his team in order to get the meaning of the incomplete statement from him.

“Alright,” Mr Williams began. “Team up as supported. By next week the two teams will have a serious debate with good points on this issue. The winning team gets As. Consider it as your C.A” the teacher walked out.

Alice glared at Margret. “Babe, you’re unbelievable!” she walked out angrily followed by Rose. Just then, Crucifix approached Margret victoriously.

“Thank you for believing in me. It means a lot to me.” He told her.

Aggressively, she stood up with her bag. “Don’t flatter yourself and don’t get your hopes up.” she also walked out.

Jimmy cornered Crucifix once again. He hit him on the wall like a military man. Crucifix pushed him off and adjusted his shirt.

“Do not push me like that again!” He warned.

“Do you have the code?” Jimmy asked him.

“Dude, it was just yesterday you told me. This isn’t gonna be easy. Like I have to seriously look into her eyes whenever she starts thinking about the result vault. The question is; how will I know when she’s thinking about the vault?”

“You don’t! You make her think!” Jimmy concluded seriously and walked out.

The boy was a serious threat to Crucifix. Oh, poor Crucifix, just at the time he thought things were gradually falling in place between him and some of his classmates, now was Jimmy trying to drag his legs out to the public. Dangerous….
