FORBIDDEN LOVE – Episode 4

VERONICA
***I guess I deserved everything that was coming my way, how could I expect Justin to be fully mine when I was married and I had to get over what I saw the day we were at the restaurant even though it wasn’t easy. Blessings words resounded in my mind as I thought of everything that was going on in my life, I could have waited and avoided unnecessary drama but to say I was disappointed in her is an understatement. Justin kept calling me and sending messages of apologies but I ignored them all, my bed had become my best friend as I always stayed there and cried my heart out then I pretended to be fine in front of Mwelwa and Jane but he saw right through me and I had to lie about having some headache.
I hugged my pillow tightly and kept crying as my phone rang because I knew who it was
“Maybe we weren’t meant to be”
I said looking at his picture on my phone
“I enjoyed being with you and my love for you was genuine but I can’t go on like this so I’ve decided to leave you and work on my marriage even though I’ve lost all interest in my husband but I’ll do it as long as we’re both happy and free”
I wiped the tears that fell from my eyes and got rid of everything that had to do with him.

A month it had been and I was slowly moving on or was I lying to myself coz I’d fight the urge to call him, I couldn’t erase his contacts from my mind coz they were written there, his face I saw every time I closed my eyes, his voice I heard whenever I was alone.
I was working on being the perfect house wife so one morning I got up and played loud Gospel and I began doing house chores, I cleaned, dusted and scrubbed without our maid’s help then after getting myself clean I prepared my husband a home cooked meal in such a long time. My phone rang and a part of me wished it was Justin since he’d stopped calling so I rushed to get it, disappointment washed all over me when I saw that it was mom, I hadn’t spoken to her in a long time since I was caught up with so much drama
“Mom”
***I answered***
“Mwana wandi (my child)”
“How’re you mommy”
“I’m not okay, you’ve totally forgotten about me only Bashi Jane communicates”
“No mom I haven’t I mean how could I? It’s just that a lot has been going on”
“Is everything alright Vero?”
***I could tell that she was worried***
“Yes everything is okay just that my mother in law has kept me occupied lately”
***I couldn’t tell her the truth***
“Be obedient to her, she’s your mother too coz I know how you can be at times”
“Yes mom, I’ll come and see you tomorrow coz I’ve missed you”
“I’ll be waiting”
I was about to say something but was interrupted by a knock on the door so I wrapped up the call and went to the door. I opened the door and blinked several times trying to process what was happening, Blessings was standing there with a huge smile on her face and I shut the door in her face and went to seat on the couch but she opened it and came in then I looked at her in disbelief
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
***I thought she wasn’t being real but she kept a straight face***
“I hate your guts little girl, I know you’re married to the man of your dreams, you’re happy and living thee life so leave me alone to face my problems. I DON’T NEED YOU SO GET OUT OF MY HOUSE RIGHT NOW”
***She just looked at me like I didn’t even say a word then after some time she sighed and crossed her legs on the couch***
“Firstly you won’t talk to me like that and you’re the one with guts for shutting the door in my face”
***She sounded calm as possible***
“This is my house and I have every right to do as I please to a backstabbing b***h like you”
“Backstabbing b***h!”
***She laughed out loud***
“Veronica you’re such a coward for locking yourself up and avoiding everyone instead hearing the truth”
“What truth when everything was clear? Justin was with some girl and you were happy with it, you who had to have my back where happy with it”
“Don’t judge a book by it’s cover”
“I’m not surprised because you’ve always been against my relationsh¡p with Justin from the beginning so what was I supposed to expect? Come on get your stuff and leave this place you add no value to my life as well as that guy Justin in fact you van have him too coz you both mean ” NOTHING” to me”
*** I emphasized on the word “nothing” and she couldn’t hide the hurt she felt***
“I’m leaving but know that you’ll come crawling on my door asking me for forgiveness and I’ll kick you out like a useless dog”
She left and I was left wondering what made her think she had the upper hand when she had wronged me and the more I gave it a deep thought, the more I felt like my head would explode so I tried to shift my attention to something else but I’d find myself thinking if the same issue….

I stepped out of the house that day for the first time ever since that incident and I told Mwelwa that I’d pick Jane up from day care, I spent most of the day catching up on my favourite series until I started to get prepared to see mom. I wore a white, lacy dress and silver sandals, applied a bit of make up until I was satisfied with my looks. I took a taxi going to mom’s and I didn’t realize how much I missed her, we talked about different things and I had a great time coz she was great company. The nosy neighbours deliberately pretended to visit mom when I actually knew what they were there for, they wanted to see how the dumped single mother was faring in her marriage as I was always there topic of discussion. I left mom’s house and promised to keep in touch more often.
Getting to day care, most of the teacher’s seemed glad to see me as I was known because of Jane’s naughty behaviour, I got in her class and she ran to me for a hug like she hadn’t seen me in years making the wh0le class burst out in laughter
“Where have you been hiding? We haven’t seen you in a month if I’m correct”
***Her teacher said approaching me for a handshake***
“I was just held up with some stuff”
“Anyway, it’s good to see you again”
***She smiled at me and I returned it, it made me wonder if I was away for that long***
“How’s my little behaving?”
“She just showed you how when you walked in”
***We both laughed then she continued***
“She’s talking about you mostly and most of the pupils in here have been eager to meet you”
“Talking about me!”
“Yeah but don’t worry it’s in a good way she more like brags about you”
“She’s hyper I know that”
***Then there was that awkward moment of silence***
“Umm….I’ll have another teacher look after these, can you come to my office so we can discuss Jane’s performance?”
“Sure”
***I turned to Jane***
“Jane just take your seat for a while, I’ll be right back so that we can leave”
She frowned then returned to her seat, I followed her teacher behind then when we got to her office she opened the door and made way for me to get in first then when I thought she’d join me she closed the door leaving me in there alone and Justin appeared out of the blue looking so handsome in his formal clothes and I felt butterflies in my stomach right that instant and the smirk he had on his face did wonders on me. We both starred at each other and he took slow steps approaching me, I opened my mouth to say something but cat caught my tongue
“Veronica?”
***I was still shocked by what was happening until he touched my shoulder and I snapped out if it***
“Veronica, do what you want you can scre-m, yell or even hit me but just don’t stay quiet because I know that you’re hurt and it’s slowly killing me”
***I sighed***
“Why did you lie to me?”
“I didn’t lie to you”
“THEN HOW THE HELL DO YOU EXPLAIN WHAT HAPPENED THAT DAY?”
***He made me seat down and calmed me down***
“You know what I do for a living, right?”
***I nodded***
“There’s something I’ve kept from you, I’m a gangster hiding in a white collar job, it’s my profession so what happened that day was just an act”
He narrated the wh0le story and I was left in shock when he was done, so he was protecting and not hurting me and Blessings went an extra mile to do the same but I let my anger get the best out of me so I was in for it
“I know what you’re expecting from me, you probably think I’m going to leave you after telling me about who you are but I won’t. You became a gangster before you even met me and I won’t push you out of it but if you ever think of quitting I’ll be there for you, all I ask is that you protect me, Jane and yourself”
“The two of you are my priorities so I’ll protect the both of you even if it’s the last thing I ever do on earth”
“We’re good then”
“and thank you so much for understanding”
He pulled me in for a long tight hug and we left, I went to fetch Jane from class and her teacher had that smile on her face we drove away she was excited to see Justin and was all over him until I put her on a tight leash coz she was disturbing him when driving.
I was dropping off at the mall because I had to do my grocery shopping and Justin was in a hurry to attend a meeting so he dropped us off at the supermarket and went away
“Awww why did he leave?”
“He’s got work to do”
She kept sulking and we went in.
I picked what I needed and was exhausted by the time I was dine since little Jane kept me on my toes, I was pushing the trolley towards the paying point when Jane started nagging me that she wanted a bar of chocolate and despite the exhaustion I had to get it for her if I was to have my peace, she pointed to the type she wanted which was on the bottom shelf and I got it then just when I got up, I felt like I saw a ghost and I started shaking with my bottom lip trembling. I dropped what was in my hands and wished for the ground to open up and swallow me, what a small world we live in, karma had undoubtedly visited me and there was no escape route. He stood there looking unchanged from the last time I saw him and the resemblance said it all, Jane was a female younger version of him. Yes, I’d met Jane’s biological father…
