Chapter sixteen
Kate’s pov
I walked home from school to meet my sisters at the doorway with their arms akimbo
” good afternoon sister faith, good afternoon sister Lara, good afternoon sister Titi ”
They didn’t even answer me
I try to enter the house but sister Lara pushed me back
” where do you think you’re going to ” sister Titi hissed at me
” what’s the matter with all of you, please tell me what’s going on ”
A heavy slap landed on my cheeks
” how dare you ask me that kind of question, I wanted the best for you, you’re an idiot, how dare you insult Chukwudi ”
” but I didn’t insult him ”
” you’re a fool Kate, you see we can’t afford to have you around, you’re a liability, you contribute nothing to this house, you’re no longer welcome here, you can go and meet Chukwudi ooo, and that’s if he still forgives you ”
” yes pack your bags and go, you too should and go and hustle ”
Sister Lara said viciously
” please don’t do this to me, where do you expect me to go to, please don’t kick me out ”
I kneeled down and beg them with tears in my eyes
One look at their grim faces made me realize that the matter was already concluded
But over my dead body will I beg Chukwudi!
Sister Lara entered into the house and sister Titi followed suit
Sister Faith gave me an apologetic look
” I’m sorry Katie, there’s nothing I could do to change their minds, I’m sorry I couldn’t fulfill my promise ”
I nod my head with tears
I’ve always known that those two are demons
They started flinging my things out through the window
” won’t you come in,side now or do you want to go with her? ”
They shouted at sister faith
” why do those two hate me? ”
” they’re only jealous of you Katie, amongst all of us, you’re the one that has the best life, do you think I like being a pr-stitute, do you think I don’t feel disgusted each time a guy sleeps with me for money, of course I do!, but I dont want you to lead the kind of life I lead, that was why I was insisting on the fact that you marry Chukwudi, but you insulted him Katie ”
I didn’t even bother to stop my tears
” but I don’t liiik…ee him ”
” I’ll see what I can do to raise your school fees, I’m sorry Katie, I wish things hadn’t turned out this way, wherever you go, please don’t go to Chukwudi ”
Oh Lord! Why me!!
I packed the little belongings I have and started walking aimlessly, without a destination
Then I remember my brother
I went to the garage and asked for my brother
” please I’m looking for Tizzy ”
” go down down down, you’ll see one red container, you’ll cross to the motor park , you’ll now go down small, you’ll now see one black car, you can ask for him there”
” OK thanks ”
I begin to walk according to the direction I was given, it wasn’t long before I located my brother
” Kate?, wetin do you ”
” Tizzy they don chase me comot for house oh, as I dey so I no know where I fit go, na why I say make I come meet you, maybe I fit dey sleep for garage ”
” you no fit stay here, ah no!, you no fit stay here at all, this place no be place where girl fit stay”
” Tizzy I go manage am, I no get hope again, na you be my last hope ”
” make I no lie you, you see that girl ( he points to a girl barely my age), na last year she come, they don give am belle, you see Nkechi and Teni, they don give them belle, you see that egun girl, na last month she come, she sef don begin dey spit ”
” chai! Wetin I go come do like this ehn”
I sit down on a bench and sighed
Some guys passed and they started hailing my brother
” Tizzy! Tizzy!! Agba!!!, see the kind babe wey you dey carry”
” this one Na my sister oh”
” omo! This your sister set oh! ”
” Kate, you should get going now ”
” but where am I going to go”
” I don’t know oh, you too should go and hustle, at least na since when I Don turn fourteen na im I Don leave house ”
It was true!
Tizzy or rather Timothy had left home since he was fourteen to become a conductor and now I can’t help but wonder if he actually left or my sisters kicked him out
” na the last kobo wey dey my hand be this, take am, if you need anything, call my number ”
He handed a five hundred naira note to me and bade me goodbye
They say friends are always there for you during tough times, it was time to be with friends
I quickened my pace and begin to walk to Ngozi’s house
I met her practising the defense of her debate in front of her audience, chioma, David and Mary
She opened her mouth in shock when she saw the big bag I was holding, I didn’t even change my uniform
” Katie!!! ”
She pulled me into a hug
I couldn’t control my tears
” come on let’s go in”
She pulled me into the house and I sit on the three sitter chair.
” come on, eat something before you tell me what happened ”
She went into the kitchen and returned with a plate of rice, decorated with fried plantains and fish.
I salivated at the sight of it.
I started took two little spoonfuls of it before I started eating with relish
I can’t even remember how long I have eaten something like this before
” well I’m dying with curiosity, what’s going on Katie ”
Ngozi said as soon as I finished eating
” my sisters kicked me out, I have no where to go…
I blurted everything out before I could control myself
I watch her face w¡den in surprise
” you’re welcome to stay here with us, you should have told me how bad things were Katie, however little it may be, I could have helped ”
” thanks so much Ngozi, but what about your mom ”
” believe me my mom wouldn’t kick you out ”
Her mom came in at that moment
” Kate! How are you? ”
” I’m fine MA, good evening ma”
And true to her words, her mom didn’t kick me out, she welcomed me to stay for as long as I liked, I was touched by their generosity.
As I lay down on Ngozi’s luxurious bed hours later
I couldn’t help grinning
Everything happens for a reason
Perhaps things were actually getting better for me
I bring out Ngozi’s phone and begin to write my debate
I was possessed with the will to win
I wrote with a lot of enthusiasm
And as I clicked SUBMIT
I couldn’t help saying a prayer
“Father Lord please let me qualify”
Ngozi’s pov
Its amazing how time flies
It’s been two days since Kate has been with us and I have never been so happy in my entire life
I woke up and yawned
Kate was busy rubbing her eyes
” is it morning ”
” yeah Monday morning ”
I woke chioma up
I could hear my mom singing worsh¡p songs from her room
Ever since I told her about the competition, she became extra prayerful
We started the morning devotion and we did our respective chores .
We then went to prepare for school
Afterwards we sat down on the dining table and ate our breakfast.
” bye bye mom ”
” bye bye ma ”
” bye girls, make me proud, best of luck! ”
I went to the school with a lot of anxiety
I saw Bukky waiting for us at the school gate
” Bukky how far”
” you guys should let’s go into the hall ”
” o boy!, plenty relationsh¡ps go scatter for school today o, as in all the girls are saying that if their boyfriend doesn’t qualify, they’re going to break up with him”
” Na them sabi ”
We entered into the grand hall
The principal and all the teachers were seated
They were also external committees there
” it is with great pleasure that I stand before you to announce the top fifty qualifiers for the mr/mrs debate competition, once you hear your name, walk up to the stage immediately ” Mr Smith said
My heart started beating fast
I, Bukky and Kate held each others hand
” and the first runner up is……. Amanda Smith ”
People were already shouting ” ojoro! Ojoro!!”
At the back
Amanda cat walked to the stage, it further increased my fears
It was as if Bukky could sense my fears
” relax, Ngozi, God no go shame us”
” and the second runner up is……. Ngozi Adams ”
Kate and Bukky whooped with joy
I hurriedly walked up to the stage
I saw someone lift up a banner
It was Donald
Our eyes met and we smiled
‘ KEEP SOARING’ The banner read
“And the third runner up is…… Kate oladipupo ”
I’m so happy, Kate walked up to the stage and we linked hands together.
” the fourth runner up is ……… Abimbola Michaels”
I saw one ski-ny girl walk to the stage
Fear catch me!
” the fifth runner up is…….. Olubukola oyedeji ”
I didn’t know when I scre-med in delight
I was amazed that Bukky could qualify as the fifth runner up because she is just an average student
Even Bukky found it hærd to believe, she was beaming with smiles as she walked up the stage
Tope stood up and clapped and everyone turned to look at him
” decorum please!!!, can that young man please sit down ”
Tope sat down with a boyish grin
” the sixth runner up is……. Boluwatife Okikiola ”
Wow, Amanda and Tife actually qualified
” the seventh runner up is Tina Olayiwola ”
I didnt even listen to the rest of the names, all the people that mattered to me had qualified.
” and now the boys section, the first runner up is……
