5 months later!!

Dear Diary,
It’s graduation day!!!
I know it’s been ages since I last gave you any attention. I have so much to tell you. A lot has happened the last few months.
First things first, happy New Year, we made it to 2018 and I am officially 21.
So what did you miss while I was away?
Obviously I completed school and I cleared my courses with clear A’s.
I am back at work and the project for empowering young women in rural areas kick started last month.
Koko, the girls, Sherister and I shifted to another house since I am now officially working and I can afford to pay rent.
Sherister gave birth to baby boy- Carter, we moved with her because her mother has been up and about, she has been too busy to even look after her and the baby plus Sherister has changed.
Wait what have I left out? I was one of the ten ladies Jessie choose to empower through her org-nization, lord that woman has been a blessing, she has mentored me the past few months I swear I am not the same anymore, with her help I am even working on my book ‘Perfect Imperfections.’
I have some bad news though: Elijah left, I haven’t seen him in like five months, well Mel and I are dating though but I am unsure of how I feel about him, yes he makes me laugh but the spark just isn’t there. You must be wondering why I am with him, well he has been a great support system, this is my way of appreciating him for being there for me.
Anyway that aside, I am so excited today is my graduation day. Yes! Koko I made it.
I woke up early today and stumbled into the bathroom to shower.
When I step out of the shower I find the makeup artist waiting for me, yes I hired someone to do my make up today because I want it to be flawless, this is my day I have to look extremely beautiful.
I sit down on my stool as she works on my face, Angie actually recommended her she will be doing her make up too.
Halfway through the process, my phone vibrates.
She hands me my phone, it’s a text from Angie, ‘Just left the saloon, is Sharon already there?’
‘Yes.’
‘Okay, will be there shortly.’
‘Cool.’
By the time she finishes doing my makeup Angie is already at the house.
‘Zen! Koko’s voice echoes loudly in the entire room.
‘Ma.’
‘You are behind time.’
‘Almost done.’
‘Okay.’
We have less than an hour before we are due at the auditorium.
Sharon finishes doing Angie’s make up, we pay her and she leaves then we start getting dressed.
*****
‘You look beautiful,’ Angie says, we are standing in the front of the mirror and admiring ourselves.
‘You look pretty yourself.’
She smiles.
I am wearing a white backless dress with a scoop neckline and it has a silk ribbon around the wa-ist. On my feet is a pair of silver heels, I have dangling earrings on my ears and a matching necklace around my neck. Angie on the other side is clad in a tight fitting white dress with a laced back reaching an inch above her knees she has some pink wedges on her feet.
‘Girl we are slaying,’ she says before she removes her phone and takes a few photos of us.
‘The future is female,’ I smile back at her.
‘You said that right.’
‘Now for the final touch,’ I say
We grab our blue graduation gowns and caps, we smile putting them on.
‘Perfect,’ we say in unison
We walk out of the bedroom to the living room to find Koko getting the girls ready.
I clear my throat and she looks up.
‘Oh baby,’ she says her excitement evident.
‘I know.’
‘You look amazing both of you.’
‘Thank you Koko.’
‘I am supper proud of you my doll, time sure flies fast, it seems like yesterday when I held you in my arms and gave thanks to God for you and now you are all grown up.’
‘I am grateful Koko.’
She embraces me.
I smile
‘I bless you my baby, I pray that God continues to be with you as you head into this new time in your life,’ she says.
‘Amen.’
‘You guys look amazing,’ Sherister says
‘Thanks Rister.’
Sherister too would have been graduating this year but she didn’t do well in her exams so she is repeating her last semester and will probably graduate next year.
‘You guys get going we shall join you shortly.’
‘Okay.’
We walk out of the house to her car, we jump into the car and soon we are on way to school.
‘I am anxious,’ Angie says
‘Why?’
‘I can’t wait to see my graduation present from dad.’
‘You have anything specific you want.’
She smiles, ‘I want a new car.’
‘Oh.’
‘He was really impressed with my results girl you pushed me so hærd, I can’t believe I cleared with A’s.’
‘I am glad I helped.’
‘You did more than that Zen, you believed in me even when I didn’t believe in myself.’
‘That’s what friends do.’
‘Nah you and I are no longer friends, we are sisters.’
‘How sweet.’
‘I can’t believe we are here,’ she says as pulls the car into the school parking lot.
‘I know. Four years. Feels like they flew.

09:00
We are sitting in the auditorium in our allocated seats, the guardians are sitting on the other side. I can see Koko, Sherister, the girls and Mel, even Jessie is here.
The ceremony has already commenced, I am listening attentively to the long roll call of names and speeches, Angie is busy on her phone, she is mad because lover boy is running late.
‘Just calm down he will be here soon,’ I whisper.
‘I swear to God if he misses this, I am dumping him.’
I smile, ‘Relax.’
‘Whatever.’
After hours of waiting my name is finally called.
‘Zendaya Mathjis !’ The Dean calls my name.
I stand up anxiously and walk to the podium and shake hands with everyone in front before I get my degree then I walk down the steps and back to my seat where I watch the rest of the students receive their own degrees.
‘Class of 2017, Business and Administration Best Student, Zendaya Mathtjis.
I jump out of my seat and Angie wraps her arms around me.
‘Oh my God.’
I walk back to the stage, I can see Koko standing and applauding me.
They hand me a certificate and an envelope with my award I stand for a brief moment as they take photos of me.
Finally after all is done, I am awarded again as the most outstanding student during my intake. I walk to the podium yet again and this time I am supposed to present a speech.
‘You see that woman standing in the second roll, that’s my grandmother, thank you Koko for believing in me and thank you for putting me through school, all these awards are for you.’
The audience applauds.
I want to say more to Koko but this is not the right time.
I go on to speak with sincerity thanking my lecturers and fellow students.
The conclusion of my speck is greeted with warm applause.
As I leave the stairs to go and meet up with Koko, I s₱0t someone who looks like Elijah but then I brush it off, maybe it’s just someone who looks like him.
‘Congratulations.’
‘Thank you Koko.
‘I am proud of you.’
I smile not trusting the stability of my own voice I owe this woman my life.
‘I don’t know what I would have become if you had not dedicated your life to raise me and send me to school,’ I say and this time around I can’t help but break down.
She wraps me in her arms and soothes me as tears stream down my face.
When I am calm, she hands me my presents, Sherister too embraces me and gives me a gift bag.
‘Thank you.’
‘You deserve it.’
‘Hey little man,’ I smile at her son, he giggles, I carry him and we take photos.
Angie is still talking to her father.
‘Hey girl congratulations!’ Jessie says
‘Thank you for coming.’
‘Women supporting women I wouldn’t have missed it for anything,’ she smiles.
‘Thanks.’
‘I got you something,’ she hands me a box.
‘Thanks.’
I introduce her to Koko and they talk for a bit before she leaves.
Mel walks over to me after sometime.
‘Hey babe.’
‘Hey!’
‘You look beautiful and congratulations.’
‘Thanks,’ i say eying him appreciatively
‘You are welcome.’
He hands me some plastics.
‘Let me put all these in Koko’s car since she is going home now.’
I have received so many presents yet I haven’t even opened them, I will do that when I get home.

Thirty Minutes Later
I am still waiting for Angie, she is still talking to her father, the program is finished, Koko has gone home, we shall meet her home for lunch then later in the evening, her boyfriend me and Mel will have dinner together.
Speaking of her boyfriend, he made it though he was slightly late and Angie is still angry.
Mel and I are taking photos when someone taps me on my shoulder, I turn to find Elijah, so it was him I saw.
