Chapter 21 πŸ€πŸ€ fififi

(Strife filled notes…..)

Chan was a little boy again. A little helpless child, standing before the man who had made his childhood, and most of his life as a result, miserable.

He stepped back in alarm, letting to of Lee’s hand in the process, feeling several unwanted memories assaulting his mind. Not that they had somehow been forgotten, but they were now coming in with such quick succession that he almost lost his bearing.

The devil smiled, then opened it’s mouth, to utter words nothing could have prepared Chan to hear.

“I’ve finally found you. My son.”

Aster stared the two men standing at the front door. He wanted to ask what was going on, especially with the fact that Chan’s face had somehow lost it’s color, but Cynthia needed him. He was torn. He didn’t know whether to stay here and figure out just what exactly this situation was, or run to Cynthia. Who was this man?

From all indications, it seemed like he was Chan’s father. But this entire time, he had thought both of Chan’s parents were dead. Or Maybe he just assumed that because while he was sure that Chan’s mother was dead, as they had held memorial services for her, Chan never really spoke of his father, so he had just assumed that he was dead too.

This was definitely a messy situation.

He stared at his phone, then back at Chan’s drained form, then decided that he would quickly run down to get Cynthia. Lee could hold the fort for just a few minutes right?

She could. And if anything got too messy, his mom would be able to handle things.

“Lee. I’ll be right back.”

“Aster! Where are you going?” Lee tried to call after her brother but he had already sprinted out of the house.

She stared at Chan, who looked like he had forgotten how to breathe, and back at the two men who were waiting patiently at the open door, whom she recognized as the men that had accosted her on her way home. She steeled herself, though she was scared, and put on a brave face.

“What is this? Are you guys some kind of stalkers? If you don’t leave right now, I’m gonna call the Police.”

The man who looked like Chan smiled warmly at her, then turned his attention to Chan. “I’m sorry my dear. I know this must be a wh0le lot for you to take in, but I assure you that we are nothing of what you might think. Though the way we approached you earlier was shady, I was really just desperate to find my son.”

“You keep calling him your son, but look at him. He looks terrified of you. I don’t believe you. I’m sorry, but you’ll have to leave.”

The younger man whispered in Mann’s ear, and he nodded solemnly. Lee stared them down cautiously.

“I’m sorry young lady. But could you call your parents if they are in? I think we would be able to talk to them better.” The younger man said firmly. He didn’t sound as friendly as the older guy had sounded.

“No. I said you either leave or I call the cops. You followed me here didn’t you?”

She saw the veins popping in the younger guys forehead. He grit his teeth and was about to retort back when Chan suddenly grabbed Lee’s hand, pulling her behind him.

“Chan what are you….”

“Leave.” His voice was cold and distant, and it brought chills down Lee’s spine.

Chan rose his eyes to the man he called father, but they were devoid of any emotion.

“Chan. I know how you might probably be feeling, but we really need to talk. Now is not the time to throw a tantrum.”

Lee felt Chan squeeze her hands, and she could feel the rage emanating from him.

“I’m not going to ask you again.”

Mann sighed, then smiled lightly. “Alright. But I will be back. I’m not going away that easily.” He glanced at Lee, who cowered behind Chan.

“Nice meeting you, young lady. And I’m impressed by how much you care about my son. Till next time. Come on let’s go.” He gave them another respectful bow, before he and his partner walked off into the night.

After they had left, Chan moved to shut the door quietly, not letting go of Lee’s hand. She wanted to ask him what was wrong, who that man was, and why on Earth seeing him had gotten that kind of reaction out of him. But seeing him the way he was, made the words die in her throat. She just wanted to comfort him right now.

He stood by the closed door, not looking at her, but not letting go of her hand either.

“Chan…?”

He flinched at the sound of her voice, then turned round to look at her, and she had expected to see the rage that his voice had contained in his eyes, but instead she saw his eyes filled with tears, and she saw a vulnerable and very sad man, and her heart broke into several pieces.

He began to sob quietly, while squeezing her hand, and not knowing what to do, she just continued to rub circles on his hand tenderly.

🎢🎢🎢

Aster arrived at the small airport, hastily paying the taxi that had brought him, and rushing out to where Cynthia had said to meet her.

He found her quickly, she was sitting down on the pavement, a small shawl wrapped around her, which he knew would do nothing to protect her from the biting cold. He ran up to her, p-nting as he finally stopped by her side.

“S-sorry I’m late Cynthia.”

She looked up at him, then stood up silently. Her eyes were hollow, and she looked like she hadn’t slept in awhile.

“It’s fine.” She replied curtly, and Aster confirmed his fears, something was really wrong with her.

“Cynthia….is everything okay?”

She visibly flinched at his question, then stopped walking. “I….” She began, but held her tongue. Aster grabbed her hand tenderly. They were frozen cold. He squeezed them lightly.

She sniffed a little, before yanking her hand out of his grip. “I…I need to see Chan.”

Aster felt a dull ache at the way she had pulled away from him, but he pushed his feelings aside. “About Chan….some man came to see him just before I left.”

He saw Cynthia’s shoulders freeze as she once again stopped in her tracks. “W- what do you mean?”

Aster contemplated her reaction, and began to wonder if he should’ve told her at all. “It’s nothing nevermind.”

He saw her eyes fill with rage, and then she grabbed his shirt. She was so frail, it felt more like she was leaning on him than grabbing him in anger.

“Don’t lie to me Aster! Who came to see Chan?!”

Aster bit his lip. “He called himself Chan’s father. But I didn’t believe him. So I….”

Cynthia’s eyes wΒ‘dened with such shock and horror that she looked like she was about to pass out. “Oh…oh my God….”

Aster grabbed her shoulders. “Snap out of it Cynthia!”

Her eyes came back into focus and she stared at him, her horror suddenly turning into rage. “Why….why did you leave Chan alone with that man?! How could you leave him alone?!”

“You needed me! You should’ve heard how you sounded on the phone! I’ve been worried about you for the past two days! You wouldn’t pick my calls! And besides, he wasn’t alone, Lee was there too….”

“You should have cared more about Chan! Why did you leave him?! I trusted you Aster!”

Aster bit his lip and tried to calm down. Cynthia was clearly not in the right frame of mind. Arguing with her wasn’t wise.

“Look Cynthia, right now, every moment we spend here is wasted. I think we should get back home as quickly as possible.”

His words seemed to get to her, and she turned on her heels and began to walk briskly away, while he ran and struggled to keep up with her.

🎢🎢🎢

Chan had finally calmed down, and he and Lee were seated in the living room. Mrs Peterson had also been briefed after coming out of her room on hearing the commotion. The three of them now sat in the living room quietly, no one actually knowing what to do or say.

The front door burst open suddenly, and a woman Lee didn’t recognize barged in, looking frantic and unkept. Aster came in behind her not long after.

Chan turned, and recognition filled his eyes upon sighting the woman.

Tears filled the woman’s eyes,as she staggered towards Chan.

“Chan….I’m…I’m…. sorry.”

Chan’s eyes wΒ‘dened.

“You knew.”

“I’m sorry Chan… I’m so sorry.”

Chan squeezed Lee’s hand tightly.

“Why didn’t you tell me? Why….?”

“I didn’t know how to. I wanted to prevent this from happening as much as possible. I can’t believe I was so stupid and careless that he found you this easily.”

Chan’s grip on Lee’s hand got even tighter. “Well what did your silence do? He still found me didn’t he? I still had to face that man. I still had to…..”

The woman had reached Chan and had fallen at his feet, holding his other hand. “I’m so sorry Chan. I’m so sorry….”

Lee, Aster and Mrs Peterson watched the wh0le scene unfold before them, no one knowing what was the right thing to do or say in this situation.

When everyone had calmed down, they all sat at the dining table. Mrs Peterson had gotten Cynthia some food and a glass of water, and she took it gratefully.

She sat down at the table with them, the only true adult in the room.

“I know we really shouldn’t pry, but as it is, my family is already involved in your lives, so I feel we have a right to know what is going on.” She said firmly, giving everyone at the table a cautious glance.

Cynthia stared blankly into the glass of water before her, before clearing her throat. “It’s not my place to tell you anything. I’ve already done more harm than good.”

“You need to stop blaming yourself Cynthia. Please.” Aster said, his voice strained.

Lee bit her lip. The air around the table was thick and heavy with emotions and secrets. She wished everyone would just talk it out and say what was really in their hearts.

“There’s nothing to tell.” Chan said suddenly. “That man is a monster, and I suggest we call the Police and give them his description now before it’s too late.”

Everyone was silent after Chan’s statement. No one knew what to make of it. The Petersons felt they couldn’t really make any contributions since they didn’t know the full story.

Lee cleared her throat and spoke up. “Maybe… maybe we should hear him out. I just feel…in my heart that that would be the right thing to do.”

Chan’s head whΒ‘pped around to face her so violently, an incredulous look on his face. He didn’t let go of her hand though.

“I don’t think that’s your decision to make Lee.” He said firmly.

She pressed her l-ips down in an effort to seem bolder. “I know that. But I’m bringing that opinion not for my own sake, but for yours.”

He let go of her hand now.

“And what makes you think you know what’s best for me?”

His words hurt her, and she began to see the person that had disappeared, the person she had met four months ago, re appearing again.

“Chan….”

“You have no idea of the situation, so who the hell do you think you are making decisions for me?”

“Then tell me what the situation is! Don’t leave me in the dark and expect me to understand!” Her voice rose higher than she had intended for it to.

“It’s none of your business.” Chan spat out, emphasizing each word harshly.

“Do you have to know everything about me to take my side? You don’t even know anything about that man, yet you’re siding with him?”

“This isn’t about taking sides,Chan! You know that! I’m doing what I think is best for you because I care about you!”

“And I’m telling you that you’re wrong to do so.” Chan turned to Cynthia who was shivering in her seat.

“Go on. Tell her Cynthia. Tell her just how much of a monster that man is.”

Cynthia gulped.

She wanted to side with Chan. She felt so guilty to him. But then she remembered the words of the holy spirit that she had heard in her ehary not to long ago.

That what if all this was orchestrated by God?

What if this was all another wacky and crazy plan being set into motion by Him?

She had thought that by keeping Mann away from Chan, it would make Chan hate her. She realized now, that no matter what she did, Chan would probably still hate her. Her heart bled as she opened her mouth to speak.

“I….I think that sh-she’s right….Ch-Chan….may-maybe….” The words died in her throat at the look on his face.

“Have you all lost your minds?” He asked, standing up from his sit. He stomped into the house angrily.

“Chan wait! Stop acting like a child!” Lee called out after him, but he didn’t even look her way. They heard the loud slamming of his bedroom door some moments later.

Lee slumped defeatedly into the dining chair, feeling the weight of the tense air pushing her down. This was too much. Things were just starting to look and get better. Why was God allowing something like this to happen again?

She just couldn’t understand it.

Mrs Peterson sighed, then smiled. “Alright. It looks like we might not get anywhere this night. Why don’t we all get some rest? And we can see what happens tomorrow?”

No one answered her, but they all agreed with her.

Aster gave up his room for Cynthia to spend the night in, and he grabbed some blankets for himself, while Cynthia stood solemnly in the room.

He stopped as he was about to leave the room, and she looked up at him, rubbing her arm nervously.

“Look, Cynthia….I’m sorry if you feel that I abandoned Chan and chose you instead. I really didn’t. I chose you both. I just made the only decision that came to me at that point.”

Cynthia didn’t look at him,but instead continued rubbing her arm.

“That’s not possible. It’s not possible for you to have chosen us both. And the worst part is…. I can’t even hate you fot choosing me instead. That’s how pathetic I am.”

Aster began to get irritated with her constant running or her arm. “You need to help Lee and I understand what is going on. We can’t help you guys unless we know. We both care about you guys. Why can’t you see that?”

Cynthia bit her lip and continued to rub her arm, and out of frustration, Aster dropped the blankets he was holding and grabbed her hand stopping her.

“Please stop doing this to yourself! If not for yourself but for me. I can’t stand seeing you like this. Please….”

She stared up at him, more tears filling her eyes, and rose her free arm to his cheeks touching them tenderly.

Aster found himself leaning into her touch, then closer to her face, before he crashed his l-ips into hers without warning.

She didn’t protest, but instead wrapped her hands around his neck and k-ssed him back fervently. Tears fell from her face into the k-ss,as she staggered but Aster used his arms to hold her up.

Her eyes suddenly shot open and she pushed him away, guilt and anger plastered over her face.

She covered her mouth in horror, as more tears began to fall from her eyes.

“Look at me. I’m…I’m so shameless. Chan is hurting right now. Yet here I am…here I am….”

She choked on her words, as Aster quietly picked his blankets from the ground.

“You know Cynthia, sometime from now, you’ll probably say that you don’t care about Chan enough. But you do. You care about him more than yourself. So I don’t think you should doubt yourself anymore. Goodnight.”

He shut the door, and Cynthia fell to the bed, crying profusely.

🎢🎢🎢

Lee sat at her piano, playing a song she had written a few days ago,her heart heavy.

The melody was soft and calming, and she had written it with Chan in mind, with the way he made her feel, the precious moments she had spent with him, and the way she wanted God to shape his life to be the best it could be.

Tears fell from her eyes. She was so confused.

Why was all this happening? It had Happened so fast.

In just one night, the happiness and love in the home had been shattered. Did God just give people happiness to take it away later on?

Was this some kind of test?

If it was, which was God testing? Her, Chan, Aster? Who exactly?

Did God really test people with such hurtful and painful things?

One word came to her heart.

“Pray.”

And so she did.

She knelt at her piano, her tears falling onto the keys.

“God…. I have no idea what you’re doing. And honestly I don’t think I could understand it if I tried. But you said we should have faith. I told Chan to have faith. So I should have it too. Things are so bad now God. But who else do I turn to? I have no one else but you. So I WILL TRUST YOU. I know you won’t fail me. I know your wisdom is greater than mine. I know you see what I can’t see. I know the plans you have for me and the ones I love are thsoe of good and not evil. I know you won’t hurt me and the ones I love on purpose. So I trust you God. Have your way, and heal our hearts.”

The sun began to rise at that moment, as Lee finished her prayer, bringing along with it the promises of hope, and God’s love.
