Chapter 109 :- Darker times ahead

My mom once said that Religion is just like a body, cover-up and that faith is a soul. Back in the day, I wasn’t much of of a dedicated christian plus I was obsessed or rather distracted by the mystery of the supernatural to understand what she meant but now I do.

After saving that young lady from the beach, I took her to the nearest hospital I could find and kept her there. Calabar was still in chaos and the night hour had finally clocked in. I could have left Calabar but I couldn’t leave not without Christen and since she wasn’t yet available at the moment, I decided to do what I can to save people.
Shortly after I had left the hospital, Calabar’s electricity went off instantly putting the entire city in a state of pitch black darkness and as if that wasn’t spooky enough thick fogs began to appear covering the streets and atmosphere making nearly hard to see and thanks to that, things got only more worst.
A few minutes after the fog had appeared, there was series of car accidents all over the city but the main reason why this accidents were occurring was because the fog was twisting people’s minds with horrific illusions. I should have been affected but I’m no longer human and the magical effect of fog was useless against me. I did my best to save the people I could by taking them off the street which was now in utter chaos and just when I thought that I had managed to lessen the situation, something far more worst had occured.
Ever since this chaos began, the mermaids were now where in sight but now that it was night time and the city was covered in thick fog, they suddenly popped out of the darkness. I didn’t know how they got into the city but all I knew what that, they were snatching people off the streets and yanking them into any place that there was water.
At first, I was confused wondering who to save but eventually I realized who I really needed to save. Shortly after the mermaids had appeared, I began to chase them all over the city and whilst I was doing that, I stumbled upon an orphanage home which I realized what in a state of distress. There was loud screams of children coming from the place and there was no one on the streets to come to their aid except me. In that moment, I teleported into the orphanage to see what was the cause of this distress and immediately I got in, I saw something unpleasant and horrible.
Here before my very eyes lay the bodies of the orphanage matrons and staffs. Some of their bodies were mutilated and some missing a limb, there was blood everywhere and foul stench of flesh filled the atmosphere.
As I was quietly strolling around the orphanage, I heard a small low cry from one of the children’s quarters. In that moment, I rushed to the place and busted into the room and as soon as I got in, I came face to face with some very nasty and terrifying. Just a few meters away from me stood a 7ft fish monster feeding on the innards of a young male matron greedily and the worst thing was that, some of the orphaned children were watching. Most of the children were girls and their eyes popped wide open with fear and they were to frightened to move. The fish monster who was done with his feeding turned towards to children but then instantly turned towards my direction. It was as ugly as hell not to mention huge. After staring at me for a while, the fish monster began to snap it’s teeth in a steady manner, it flickered it’s claws and then began to tilt it’s head slowly left and right. What came next took me completely by surprise.

Fish monster ➡ You look human but you don’t smell like one. Na Wetin you be?
.

Riley ➡ I don’t know how you’re talking but I’m going to smoke you this night.
.

Fish monster ➡ You dey mad!? You think say you can beat me?
.

Riley ➡ Why don’t you leave these kids alone and duke it out?. The winner takes the spoils.

Fish monster ➡ You dey challenge me?
.

Riley ➡ You dey fear?
.

Fish monster ➡ (laughs) Bastard, you go die.

Suddenly in that moment, the fish monster came at me with incredible speed and then slashed his claws on my face before I could dodge. My face was clawed but I retaliated with a powerful right hook on the side of the fish’s face. It barely flinched but I struck again this time with a powerful punch in it’s midsection. The fish monster vomited some of the intestines it had take and the smell of his puke nearly scattered my brain. The stench was awful but I endured it and kept fighting.
Angered by my assault, the fish monster smacked me hard sent me flying out of the room and out into the open. It followed me there trying to finish me off but that was when the real fight began. Seeing that I was being pounced at, I charged towards the fish monster and then teleported behind it punching it’s midsection from behind. The damned thing tried to attack but thanks to my teleportation, I was able to counter it’s incoming attack. Seeing that I was gaining the upper hand, I soon became overconfident and too focused on the fish monster that I was aware of my surroundings. Just as I was on the verge of bringing the fish monster to it’s knees, something struck me hard from behind sending me flying and crashing into the wall face first. The pain was unbearable and I was completely stunned that I didn’t know where I was but before I could recover, the fish monster grabbed me by the neck and separated my feet from the ground pinning me on the wall. As I struggled to break free, I was the thing that hit me and it was something far more worst than the fish monster.

According to the stories I’ve heard from Esther, I learnt that mermaids weren’t the only ones underneath the sea. In fact, there are thousands of different monstrous species but mermaids and sirens are the most dominant ones. The monster that struck me is a sea serpent, unlike mermaids and sirens who have fins of fish, these ones have snake bodies and unlike the mermaids, they can transform into their full sea forms and they are much bigger than the mermaids.
After slithering close to the fish monster and me, the sea serpent brought her face close at me staring me deep in the eye. It may sound odd but the sea serpent looked beautiful but in a deadly kind of way and her bright yellow serpent eyes was very horrifying. Before I knew it, the sea serpent brought out her long snake tongue and licked the side of my face before striking up a conversation with me.

Sea serpent ➡ Your blood is foul but it tastes good. Tell me what you are.
.

Riley ➡ I’m human.
.

Sea serpent ➡ You’re not. Sure you look like a human but you’re not one. I smell the scent of a witch on you and it’s….(sighs). You’re Riley aren’t you?
.

Riley ➡ I don’t know what you’re talking about.
.

Sea serpent ➡ Don’t lie. I know I’m right.
.

Riley ➡ If you know me then I’m sure you know Rose?
.

Sea serpent ➡ I know and I’m not scared of her, not anymore. Evlyn is now the new face of fear and you on the other hand are going to be food.
.

Riley ➡ Upon my dead body… I’d rather..ARRGGGHHHHH (shouts)
.

Before I could finish speaking, the fish monster quickly bit my left shoulder trying to rip it off, it dug it’s claws on the side of my ribs holding me tight so that I wouldn’t escape. In that moment, the sea serpent slithered away into room where the children are. Seeing that they were in grave danger, I decided to act fast and save them.
In that moment, I quickly used my right hand and dug my short thumb into the left eye of the fish monster trying to gouge it out. Immediately I did that, the fish monster loosened it’s grip on me and that gave me the opportunity to strike back.
Using all the strength I got in me, I kicked off the fish monster away from me creating a wedge between us. Despite the pain and injury I inflicted on it, the fish monster charged towards me trying to finish me off but before it could reach me, I teleported behind it, grab its head and teleported again all over the orphanage bashing it’s head on the walls until it was dead.
Everything was over with 2mins and despite how tired I was, I teleported straight into the children’s quarters to save them and as soon as I got into the place, the sea serpent who had laid a trap for me quickly caught and coiled me around with her snake body. She squeezed me hard and tightly slowing breaking my bones and pumping the air out of me. If I were human, I would have been dead by now.

Sea serpent ➡ I never thought you’d win but still I knew you weren’t human cause no human would have been able to defeat that thing.

Riley ➡ (grunts)
.

Sea serpent ➡ What’s the matter Riley? Can’t talk. Don’t be over. It will all be over as soon as I gobble one of these kids. I want you to watch.
.

The Sea serpent coiled me even harder than before after which she reached out trying to grab one girl amongst the kids who was screaming with fear. I felt weak in that moment but I couldn’t do anything. I wanted to use teleportation but what’s the point of doing that if the sea serpent still holds on to me and even if she let’s me go, I’ll have to heal first before I can confront her. For a moment there, I thought that I had no options left but the suddenly, I had an idea and it wasn’t a good one. There would be no going back if I used this idea of mine but it was the only way I could save all these children and if that’s what it takes to do that, then so be it.

Left with no other choice, I did the one thing that I swore never to do ever since I lost my humanity and that was to feed on other being’s life force. The Sea serpent who was busy having her fun suddenly felt weak and tired but then she notices that her life force was being drained by me.
The sea serpent tried to stop me of course but her efforts were futile cause she was losing her life and energy really fast and her strength was also being drained from her. Before long, I broke free from the sea serpent and continued to feed on her until she eventually died turning into a shrunken corpse. Despite saving the children, I struggled hard to control my insatiable desire of feeding trying yo bring myself back to normal. Having experience the irresistible feeling of draining and feeding on another’s soul made me itch to feed again. The children who were watching me struggle with myself panicked with fright waiting for what would happen next. In that moment, I dashed outside and stood still scratching my head like a madman. My whole body was on a different level, I was feeling this crazy intense pleasure and misery at the same time. It was being like held at a gun point to watch a hot naked lady and then being forced not to get hard.
After standing for a while, I fell on my knees and began to pray silently in my mind after which I stared at the moon.
In that moment, my urge soon disappears making me to calm down and collapses on the ground letting my wounds to heal. After regenerating from my wounds, I went back to the children’s quarters were I saw them looking frightened. Seeing how scared the children were, I approached them slowly and began to calm them down.

Riley ➡ It’s okay. Everything is going to be fine from now on. Let’s get you all somewhere safe.

Seeing how soft and gentle I was towards them, the kids finally decided to follow me to wherever I would take them . Despite the fact there was no threat in sight, I still took caution making sure that there was nothing that would harm the kids. After coming out of the orphanage, I found a sienna van in which I unloaded the children into and then drove off into the foggy streets of Calabar.
The streets was still filled with chaos and it wasn’t safe to be outside either. I however managed to avoid any necessary trouble and before long I found a church in which I took the kids into until everything was back to normal.
Here inside the church, I noticed that there was a handful of kids and women praying quietly as they sought refuge from the madness that was going on outside. As I roamed about the church, I saw an elderly lady together with some kids. She was busy calming them down and the way she was treating them convinced me that she could be trusted.

Riley ➡ Good evening ma.
.

Lady ➡ Hello my son, how can I help you?
.

Riley ➡ Uh, these kids are from the orphanage and their matrons and staffs are dead. I need you too look after them for me cause I’m not from around here.
.

Lady ➡ Are these the only kids you saw?
.

Riley ➡ Yes. I’ll be taking my leave now.
.

Just before I could take a step, I felt a sinister presence outside of the church. Something was lurking outside trying to make it’s way in here but it was waiting for the right opportunity to attack. As I was busy staring at the entrance of the church, my eyes caught a glimpse of some monstrous being peeping through the window and as soon as we made eye contact, the creature disappeared.

Riley ➡ Damn it..
.

Lady ➡ My son, are you alright?
.

Riley ➡ We need to leave now. This place is not safe.
.

Lady ➡ Why? This is the safest place anyone can be. We’re in the house of the lord.
.

Riley ➡ We have no time. We have to leave now.
.

Lady ➡ The lord will protect us. Come, let’s pray.
.

Riley ➡ You don’t understand. Something bad is about to happen and we all need to leave now.
.

Everyone in the church turned towards my direction after I said that, I was hoping they’d listen to me but they were all calm even when they heard strange noises outside the church. The elderly lady remained quiet for a while before saying anything to me and what came out of her mouth next left me speechless and ashamed.

Lady ➡ My son, have you lost faith in God?
.

Hearing that question made me feel like I was being stripped naked in public. I wanted to say something but the words got stuck in my throat. In that moment, I remembered my mother and this woman standing in front of me reminded me of her. The question seemed simple enough but it weakened me a lot more than the beating I got moments ago. Eventually, I had to sit down cause my knees couldn’t hold me. The elderly lady too sat next to me and placed her hand on my shoulder gently. It took me a while before I finally gave my answer.

Riley ➡ Honestly, I really don’t know.
.

Lady ➡ Something tells me that your faith has been conflicted by something else. My son, we can’t always see miracles like the old days when prophets were still around. All we can do is pray and keep having faith. God is always with us. We may feel like we’re abandoned but the lord is always watching over us.
.

Riley ➡ I still have faith in the lord but..
.

Lady ➡ Say no more. Don’t you ever doubt your faith cause once you do, your world will collapse. We’re in a time where sin is rampant and people are being blinded by it. They believe it’s nothing when they don’t know that they’re been tricked by Satan. Only those who have absolute faith can be saved from the ill temptations of this world. However it’s never too late to repent as long as there’s life. Come my son, let’s pray.
.

I said nothing after that, there was no need to. The elderly was right about my faith being conflicted. Spending time with the supernatural has started to thwart my faith in God and perhaps it is time, I prevented that from happening. However, it’s too late to cut ties with the supernatural beings cause I’m already in too deep. The best thing I can do now is hold on to my faith tighter and ever and even I could cut ties, I still couldn’t abandon Christen. She and I have been through hell together so it’s best if we saw the end of our journey together.
Shortly after the elderly lady urged me to join her in prayer, everyone soon joined us including the kids and we all began to pray. I couldn’t fully pay attention to the pray considering the strange noises that was still going on outside. I was getting a serious bad vibe about this and I wanted to check it out but I remained where I was and continued praying. A few minutes later, everywhere became quiet not just outside the church but on the streets as well. The sinister vibe I was getting was gone as well and it made me wonder if everything was over.
Suddenly just as we were about to conclude our prayers, the door of the church swung wide open violently and strong gush of wind blew into the place not to mention the fogs which swept in as well. For a moment there, I thought we were being attacked by some mermaid or monster but then to my surprise, the one behind this chilling entrance was my very own wife, Christen.

Christen’s sudden appearance into the church made everyone groan with fright, I couldn’t blame them cause the look on her face was terrifying and even though she may look human to them, she’s a witch after all. After staring at us one by one, Christen’s eyes lit up as she saw me and the chilling cold look on her face was replaced with a warm excited look. In that moment, Christen rushed towards me and gave me hug and kiss after which she began to express how happy she was that I’m still alive.

Christen ➡ Oh honey, I’ve been so worried about you. I was afraid that you might have been in trouble. I’m glad you’re okay.
.

Riley ➡ I’m glad you’re fine. So what’s going on outside?
.

Christen ➡ Everything’s over.
.

Riley ➡ Thank God.
.

Christen ➡ Come let’s go home and check on the kids.
.

Riley ➡ Sure thing. If you’ll excuse me, I need to say goodbye. Looks like this is good bye ma.
.

Lady ➡ I’m glad we got to spend some time with each other even if it’s for a short while. May God be with you.
.

Riley ➡ Amen.
.

Christen ➡ Come on Riley, let’s go.
.

Christen and I soon left the Church afterwards and as soon as we were out in the open, I noticed that the moon light rays was strangely brighter than usual. Christen who noticed that my attention was somewhere else started asking questions.
.

Christen ➡ Is there something that I need to know cause you’re acting strangely?
.

Riley ➡ I’m fine..
.

Christen ➡ Honey..
.

Riley ➡ Yes?
.

Christen ➡ Tell me the truth.
.

Riley ➡ Ah.. Kí ló shé? I told you that I’m fine. If you don’t believe me you can read my mind.
.

Christen ➡ There’s no need to.
.

Riley ➡ Where have you been with Esther?
.

Christen ➡ We went beyond the depths of the sea and into a different world.
.

Riley ➡ Can we discuss this when we get back home? Lets go check on our kids. I just hope they’re safe.
