Undying love
Chapter twenty ❤❤

Ngozi’s pov

Kate returned home with a different mood, I can always tell if anything is wrong with Kate
” Kate what’s the matter ”
” um nothing, I um everything is fine”
But Kate is Kate, she won’t talk
I continued staring at her and she winked at me
” i promise I’ll tell you about it at school tomorrow ”
Kate read all through the night
“Kate, it’s culture, you don’t have to study so hærd ”
” it’s just that I don’t know much about my culture, I’m scared Ngozi, I’m scared about the competition, I’m scared about everything, I just… ”
I wonder whats going on with Kate
” it’s alright babe, everything will be fine ”

Tomorrow is actually here
I and Kate did our chores in a hurry
My phone beeped and it was a message from Donald
‘ hello love, I miss you, meet me at the restaurant before the school, I want to show you something’ ‘okay my love, I can’t wait to see you ‘
We started our morning payers and we went to get dressed,
I finally select a gold wrapper, I wear coral beads on my wrists and feet, I also wear a lovely coral crown on my head and a beautiful one around on my neck, it drooped to my shoulders, showcasing my bare shoulders beautifully , I look traditionally beautiful, just like a princess.
” wow Ngozi, you look stunning ”
” thanks Katie, you look stunning too in that attire ”

” Ngozi do you understand what your sister is saying, she’s just saying te.. pi since morning ”

I started laughing and I pick Mary up.
” Mary don’t mind Kate, she doesn’t know you’re a fashionista, she doesn’t know that te….pi means selfie ”

I did makeup for Kate and myself and we head to school after taking pictures with mom and chioma and Mary

I stop at the restaurant before the school
” go ahead with chioma , I’ll meet you in school in a minute ”
” I’m not moving an inch from here, it’s either I go with you or you don’t go ”
” why the clinginess Kate, I’m going in to have a private time with my boyfriend and you’re insisting on tagging along with me? ”
” honestly it’s not like that, I’m just worried about you, we have to talk Ngozi ”
” OK oh, madam chaperone, let’s go in,side ”
I had no idea that a traditional attire could make one look so different
Donald looks so refined
He was dressed in a large flowing embroidered gown (at least that’s what I think it is), and a robe, he also wore a nicely embroidered cap.
” wow Donald you look…
I couldn’t find the right word to describe how he looks
We continued staring at each other
” Ngozi you look so princessy ”
I smile
“I’m sure that’s not even a word, I love your attire, what’s it called ”
” this one (he points to the gown) is called a babban rigga and the robe is called a juanni, fula is the name for the cap”
” wow ”
” I wanted to do this on you”
He brings out a tiny bottle
” what’s this ”
” this is refined uli ”
” uli! Where did you get that ”
” I have my sources, you may have your seats ladies ”
He said to chioma and Kate
Kate continued glaring at him
He brought out a feather and started painting uli on my face
It was so tingly, most people say I have a very sensitive skin, as he traced patterns on my skin, it felt like he was car-ssing me
” are you really sure you know how to paint this thing ”
” relax, I spent all night watching YouTube, I want to make my girlfriend the most beautiful girl in school today ”
He actually painted a very beautiful design of a butterfly on my left cheek
” wow, it’s beautiful, I love it”
” I’m glad you like it”
” since you’re through with what you’re doing, can we go now? ”
Kate said snappily
I wonder whats wrong with her, maybe she’s having anxiety about the competition
We stepped out of the restaurant and head to school

Tife’s pov
” Tife you’re using too much eyeliner ” Amanda yelled
” I’m sorry, I’m sorry ”
I have to quickly beg her or else I will receive slap
I’m sure no one would beat Amanda with appearance at school today
She is the definition of elegance
” Tife, you don’t really have to come to school today since you won’t be participating in the competitions, all my clothes are dirty, it’s going to take a lot of time before you wash them”
She said as soon as I finish doing her makeup

” okay Mandy, best of luck ”
I say as demurely as I can
” I love you Tife, but if you try anything funny, I will ruin you ”
She said before coming out of the house
How can she say she loves me!
She doesn’t
Yet she says that all the time
I’m sick and tired of her hurting me, treating me like shit, degrading me, Amanda doesn’t bluff but I’ll have to defy her this time
I went in,side my room and bring out my attire
I was shocked when I hear the door open and I quickly hide my cloth.
Amanda walked into the room
” Tife, who do you think is going to be queen ”
Amanda has a big ego
And I know the best thing for me to do is to flatter her
” no one can take your crown Mandy, you’re the definition of queen ”
She smiled at that
” but who’s the next person that could be queen ”
” um Ngozi, she is smart ”
Amanda nodded her head
And as she walked out of the room
She muttered to herself
” now I know who my adversaries are”
I open my mouth in shock
I wonder if I haven’t implicated Ngozi with my mouth

Francis pov

I sit next to my mom in the threesitter
She adjusts my cap
” look at my handsome son, nobody can beat you in appearance, omo Lo fine bayii
Adeojo mi
Omo awon loba loba
Ojo abaladiye Saba… ”
” mummy it’s ok, ”
I quickly silence her before she starts chanting a long line of eulogy
” OK, let’s take two shots ”
Two shots actually turned into ten shots, we continued taking pictures
” this woman, don’t delay this boy, let him go to school on time ”
My dad shouted
” go there and win, make me proud my son ”
” I will, mom”
I and David head to school
” you just look like they throw you in,side sack with that agbada that you’re wearing ”
David snorted
” I don’t blame you, it’s envy that is worrying you ”

Ngozi’s pov
We are all seated in the hall
And I watch Mr Smith pick up the microphone
” can all the qualifiers please step forward ”

We all went forward and sat down on the stage seats, everyone was looking radiant
My eyes caught Jerry with his stunning isiagu and red cap, I smile at him but he seemed to be looking at Kate

” let’s welcome the first candidate Miss Ngozi Adams ” one of the judges said
I walk to the stage
” today it’s all about culture, can miss Ngozi please tell us the meaning of culture ”
” culture can be defined as the ideas, customs and social behavior of a particular people or society ”

” bravo! That’s good, culture is all about the behavior of people, the question is how much do you know about the behavior of your own group of people, today’s test is a very simple one, and your answer will determine if you will proceed to the next competition or not, you can only skip the question only once and you’ll lose point if you do”

My heart started beating fast

” before we proceed, miss Ngozi can you please tell us the meaning of your name ”

” Ngozi means blessing”

” good job, you’re absolutely stunning in that attire , you have efficiently showcased the culture of your people”
” thanks, sir”
” every tribe has its own traditions, am I right ”
” yes sir ”
” the question goes thus, can you please explain to us the traditional way to get married in igbo land ”
I just smiled
If there’s one thing my mom has always bugged me about, it’s about having a respectable traditional marriage
” Ngozi, you’re my first daughter, it’s your footsteps that your sisters will follow, I don’t want you to behave like the girls of nowadays who get pregnant anyhow without having a respectable marriage, I will never forget the day I married your father, it was the talk of the town, Hmmm my igba nkwu…
That’s what my mom always said and she will go on a lengthy detail about how she got married to my dad
God bless you mom!

I clear my throat
” marriage in igbo is known as igba nkwu, the first thing that’s done is the introduction, that’s when members of the grooms family seeks consent form the umunna (extended family) …..
I began a lengthy detail from the introduction to the ime ego (dowry) to the igba nkwu nwanyi ( wine carrying ceremony)
By the time I was through, a thunderous applause welcomed me
I went back to my seat beaming with smiles
I don’t need anyone to tell me before I know that I did well

Another judge stood up
” and now our next candidate, miss Kate oladipupo ”
I watch Kate rise up with shaky feet
Gone was the confidence and courage that she displayed in the first competition
I watch the principal mutter something into the judges ears
And Kate’s face w¡dened in horror
” can you please tell us your name ”
” it’s um Kate oladipupo ”
” I mean your traditional name”
” it’s oluwaferanmi sir”
” and what does oluwaferanmi mean ”
” it means God loves me ”
” nice one, wonderful attire, nice combination and presentation ”
” thanks so much sir ”
” Yoruba people are fond of wise sayings or proverbs which they call owe, am I correct ”
” yyyyes ssir”
” and now Miss feranmi, please mention twenty of the wise sayings you know in Yoruba language ”
Everyone gasped!
That’s too much!
I watch the pained look on Kate’s face
And I know she won’t be able to answer the question.
